Ideas to Grow a Reader

  • Make reading a priority for yourself. Let your children see you loving to read. Don't wait to only read when the children are in bed. I know it's hard for a parent to take out time in their busy day and they feel guilty "spending time on themselves", but it really is important for the children to see you read.
  • Read aloud to your children. Start when they are little, even read to them as a baby. Even when they are older and can read for themselves, continue to read to them.
  • Fill your home with good books. Books can get expensive, but if you keep an eye out for them at garage sales, library sales, and discount book stores (like Half Price Bookstore), then you will have quite a library in no time.
  • Make going to the library a priority and make it fun. Going to the library can be exciting and something the kids look forward to. Play it up and act excited about getting to go. Make going to the library a regular event.
  • Allow the child to stay up a half and hour later than normal if they use that time to read.

Reading is so very important! We have tons of books around the house and I am trying to get my daughter to read more, but not having any luck. She reads a lot, but mostly on the computer screen.

P.S. What is The Homeschool Club?

THE HOMESCHOOL CLUB is real parents and kids sharing their best resources for great homeschooling. Each day we celebrate learning by opening doors to a world of creativity, knowledge and discovery. In the car, at the kitchen sink, and down by the frog pond - the whole world is our classroom and we explore it with creative projects, games, and activities. This club is a place to share, organize, and discuss how and what we learn in the world. Make a free page to tell your own homeschooling story and share your favorite resources. We can't wait to hear from you!
