Pamper Your Pet on February 20th!

February 20th is Love Your Pet Day! Of course, we pet owners love our pets everyday, but February 20th is day when you can honor your pets by doing something extra special for them. Not many people have heard of this holiday, and its origins are unknown. However, I believe we should work toward making this holiday more popular. Our pets do so much for us, so this February 20th pamper your pets and show them just how much you care!

Why Celebrate?

Pets make us happy and healthyWe should celebrate Love Your Pet Day because pets do so much for us! Here are some of the ways pets help us:

1. Improving emotional well-being: pets reduce stress and make us happier.

2. Improving physical well-being: owning pets can help get us active (eg. walking dogs).

3. Improving social well-being: pets are great conversation starters between strangers which can help breed friendship and love. The pets, themselves, also become our friends and keep us from being lonely.

4. Giving us purpose: pets bring meaning to our lives and help us learn responsibility (especially valuable for children).

*All of these things help make us happier and healthier, which increases our life expectancy!

How to Celebrate

Things to Do With or For Your Pet

1. Do your pet's favorite activity with him or her (eg. going for a walk or a hike).

2. Play games with your pet (eg. tug-o-war with a dog, fishing for peas with a rat).
3. Cuddle with your pet.

4. Build your pet a fort (cats and small animals love forts).

5. Bring your pet in for a spa and grooming day.
6. Buy or make your pet a special treat (see below for ideas).

7. Buy or make your pet a toy (see below for ideas).

What Do You Think...?

Which is a better way to celebrate Love Your Pet Day?

Spending lots of time with my pet

Buying my pet a special treat or toy

Ruthi says:

Although I spend a lot of time with my dog, Tidbit, and she obviously knows she is loved, I think a special Love Your Pet Day calls for a special treat. For her, a ride in the car to the park to play would be a great way to spend part of the day.

How NOT to Celebrate

1. Don't buy someone a pet as a gift for Love Your Pet Day. Pets that are given as gifts often end up in shelters, or not being properly cared for.

2. Don't force your pet to dress up and do tricks (unless your pet likes to). This is a day for you to show your pet how much you love him or her, not a day for you to show your pet off to other people.

3. Don't force your pet to do anything else he or she doesn't like (eg. bathing a pet that hates getting wet). This is THEIR day.

Don't Have a Pet?

You Can Still Celebrate By:

1. Adopting a Pet: If you think a pet might be right for you consider adopting one for Love Your Pet Day (but do your research first; you don't want to end up sending a pet back to the shelter).

2. Visiting animals at shelters or donating to them.

3. Making a bird feeder for your yard, or just going to feed ducks (I know they are wild and not really pets but you can pretend).

This is a great idea. I really enjoyed the photos of the animals. All of them look so cute. Our cat wants me to give this a Four Paws rating.
