Their Messages Are Deep And Lasting

With so many incredible metaphysical writers out there, how does one pick the top ten? That is the question I'm sitting here pondering at the moment. Obviously, it's completely subjective if I'm picking them SOOOO, I think I'll take a trip down memory lane and pick the 10 that were most important to me at crucial times in my life.

You can tell a lot about a person by what books are in his or her library or what he or she is reading at a certain time in their life. This lens is no exception. You'll know a lot about me by the end of the lens. Hopefully, it won't be too much information!

Read on and rediscover old favorites and maybe some fun new favorites. Be sure to share your wisdom and add those metaphysical writers that were key for your pivotal moments in life.

For fun we'll present them Letterman style, starting with Number 10...

How Much Do You Know About Metaphysics?

Nothing like a little quiz to start your day!

What Led Me To Metaphysics?

Growing up on a dude ranch in Montana without a TV, was a good background for becoming an avid reader. But it was in my 20s that deeper yearnings and hunger led me to other types of books. In an effort to understand the inner me, I would aimlessly wander a bookstore until some book jumped off the shelf begging to be read.

It always seemed like a message from a higher wisdom, taking me into new realms I'd never heard of or dreamed of.

In my 30s, I went to massage school and discovered my love for the healing arts. I was immediately attracted to energy work because it could take me to the cause of the symptom. The more I looked at cause, the more subtle my work became.

In my 40s and now 50s, I have realized that I am able to do healing that is out beyond my conscious ability to understand what I am doing. Now when I study metaphysics, I am looking for the explanation of what I am doing in my work. It's endlessly fascinating and fuels my continued personal and spiritual growth.

"Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail."

-Ralph Waldo Emerson

Number Ten Is...

Ralph Waldo Emerson

I read Emerson in high school for my Junior English class that was teaching how to write. I fell in love with Emerson and I fell in love with writing. Emerson inspired Thoreau with his views on self-reliance.

An interesting anecdote about Emerson concerned a fire that annihilated his home containing his extensive library. As he watched it burn down, his remark was how beautiful the flame was.

Thirty years after reading that, the home I was living in also burned down taking with it my metaphysical library at the time. I, however, couldn't watch it with Emerson's detachment...

"The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change."

-Carl Rogers

Number Nine Is...

Carl Rogers

In the early 70s, I was searching for clues about why I felt so different from everyone else. Rogers' now classic book gave me insight on why my uniqueness was actually the best of humanity shining through me. Rogers' views, that we are not only essentially good and healthy at the core of our being, but continually striving to actualize greater and greater parts of ourselves struck a cord for me. He was the first to call his clients "clients" instead of "patients."

This book brought me great comfort.

Number Eight Is...

Ernest Holmes

In my 20s, I began looking for a new type of spirituality. My father was studying Science of Mind at the time and introduced me to this great thinker, who lived about 100 years after Emerson.

"I think we'll be able to prove scientifically that other talents such as intuitive, psychic, clairvoyant and audiovoyant are very real."

-Shirley MacLaine

Number Seven Is...

Shirley Maclaine

I connected to Shirley like the ugly duckling finding his swan family. It was the first glimmer of "My People!"

Although she had already written other books prior to this one, Shirley started a new age revolution in the 1980s with this book.

Shirley seemed so familiar to me. Did we know each other from a past lifetime or was it just because we had the same birthday?

Number Six Is...

Dan Millman

Written in the 80s, Dan Millman's book The Way Of The Peaceful Warrior became a classic and eventually a movie. However, it was this later book that opened my eyes to ancient systems such as Astrology, the Enneagram and numerology. I still refer to this book today for deeper understanding of myself and others.

"Share our similarities, celebrate our differences."

-M. Scott Peck

Number Five Is...

Scott Peck

The last half of the 80s brought heartache and despair as I literally took a different road in my life (it was my late 20s which is a time of Saturn return, i.e. huge upheaval). I went through a divorce and headed off to massage school. This book consoled and supported me with these choices.

"The most important idea is that it's not as easy to open up to spiritual experience as we would like. There are some psychological breakthroughs that need to happen. Learning how not to control others and how not to control our lives so intensely are two of those breakthroughs. We have to let go."

-James Redfield

Number Four Is...

James Redfield

The 90s brought new optimism, not only in my life, but also for the country as we entered a decade of Clintons and prosperity. I first heard of this book in 1994, traveling to a retreat with Angeles Arrien and Brooke Medicine Eagle. It had been self-published by Redfield and only a few copies were to be had. Luckily it was published in mass quantities the following year by Random House. It brought new levels of metaphysical ideas to conscious awareness.

Diane Stein

Reiki introduced me to guides, psychic abilities and new possibilities in energy healing. Diane Stein's books have helped me heal most of my negative karma and karmic contracts. This in turn has helped me bring forth my own gifts and soul purpose.

You are amazing, I have done many of the same things you have. I am now working on getting my master in metaphysics. Good luck and thank-you, for your lens, they are very interesting and inspiriting.

Blessing this lens! I read Out on a Limb and Edgar Cayce when I was still in high school, that is when I first learned of reincarnation. I went to a Lutheran school until 8th grade, so I had not heard of it until noticing Shirley MacLaine. Unlike you I grew up near the coast in Southern California. Lots to do there and crowded cities. Still I did read alot also. I have read half of the books on your list. I got 100% on your quiz, of course. I am fascinated with reincarnation. On the other hand though I am very spiritual by nature I am not wanting enlightenment.

Excellent lens. Informative and well written. I would like to add my all time favorite, "In Tune With The Infinite" by Ralph Waldo Trine. It is in public domain so you can read it free on the Internet. thanks for posting this, I'm off to look at some of your other lenses..

I have read five of the ten on your list and have one of the others I've never got around to reading. Choosing only ten must have been difficult. Perhaps you should do a Top 100 as there are so many excellent choices in so many categories. Shouldn't take more than a few minutes or a few months. Great lens.
