The Wonderful City of Brisbane.

This lens is out there just to give you an idea of why this city is the best city in Australia.  It must be because people flock here from interstate for holidays and many of them never go back.  I have lived away for the past 5 years and have just managed to move back.  I am now taking the time to rediscover this wonderful city and aim to do all those things that people usually put of in their own home town.  Keep checking back, this lens (as all of mine seem to be) is a work in progress and hopefully you will discover more great things about Brisbane as I do. Enjoy your visit.......

Wonderful Places In Brisbane

These are some of the places that I have discovered in Brisbane.
  • Southbank Parklands, Brisbane City. This was the site for World Expo 88 and since then it has undergone many face lifts. It is a great place for a good meal, family BBQ or romantic stroll under the city lights. There really is something for everyone, including the performing arts complex, convention centre and one of the cheapest cinemas around!
  • Mount Cootha Lookout, Toowong. This is a must do for any visitor or resident of Brisbane. I get withdrawl symptoms if I don't get up there for too long. There is instant relaxation as you view the city to the East and out towards Ipswich in the West. The distance that you can see during the day is spectacular, though I do prefer being up there on a cold night, rugged up with a hot chocolate from the great coffee shop looking at the lights across the whole area. All your worries seem to vanish up here.
  • Stones Corner. Just out of the heart of Brisbane, this area is great for shopping. Stones Corner has a wide range of outlets that sell discount and end of range products. For anyone who loves a bargain this is the place to go.
  • Kangaroo Point Cliffs, Brisbane City. There is a small park at the base of the cliffs that has a great atmosphere. It proves popular with people who like to abseil and climb the cliffs along with families and friends who want a picnic or BBQ next to the river.
  • University of Queensland, St.Lucia. If you are into architecture there are some beautiful sandstone buildings here.
  • Queen Street Mall, Brisbane City. This is the heart of the city and the changes over the past few years shows how Brisbane has grown to compete on a world stage while keeping a grasp on it's reputation as a laid back, easy going place to be.
  • Chandler Markets: Held in the aquatic centre car park each Sunday, these markets have something for everyone. There is a great selection of fresh fruits and vegetables, arts and crafts and bric-a-brac. It is a popular Sunday ritual and as a result it is a wise move to go early and ensure easy parking.
  • Redcliffe: This coastal suburb on the Moreton Bay, to the North of the Brisbane River is a delightful place for a day trip or just somewhere to have lunch. It feels as though the city is hours away as you sit on park benches overlooking the water and indulging in fish and chips!
  • The Powerhouse: I was taken here for the first time recently. It is located in New Farm Park, at the edge of New Farm. This entire area is one of the most vibrant in the city. On the second and fourth Saturdays each month it's grounds are the location of a very popular farmer's market and each Sunday afternoon and evening it hosts "Live Wired" and "Live Spark" which are free music and stand up comedy events. The night I went I was lucky enough to see a performance by Claire Hooper, who was a regular on ABC's "The Sideshow". It was hilarious. The best thing about these events is that they are absolutely free! The worst is that parking is an absolute premium so plan your trip, get there early or consider public transport.
