So What IS Lutradur?

Lutradur is a polyester non woven industrial fabric. As well as having lots of uses in industry, though, it is ideal for textile and fiber artists. It is semi transparent, tolerates heat well enough for transfer dyeing, and can be coloured using anything you like! You can see why we call it Lovely Lutradur... Of course, that also happens to be the name of the E book we published recently. It shows how to colour and use lutradur from the perspectives of two quite different artists.

Basically, we split the book into three sections. In the first, you will find an overview of Lutradur, and how to colour it. In the second, there are a series of projects which we undertook to demonstrate how versatile Lutradur is. Each has an explanation of what we did, and how to do that yourself using your own ideas, with lots of photographs to help you visualise the process. The third and final section is a gallery of work, with a few notes as to what techniques were used to make each piece.

So...Who Are You, Anyway...

...and what's in the book?

Dijanne Cevaal
My quilts are the product of a lifelong engagement with textiles, the mobility of the stitch, the interaction of colour created by dyeing and printing and the creation of stories. As a small child, I built constructions that were stitched and embroidered, and this love of embroidery continued through my teenage and adult years. I have a Masters Degree in Visual and Performing Arts from Charles Sturt University, New South Wales, which has pushed me to examine the textile surface in a more immediate way, not simply as a vehicle for imagery, but a return to the touch and textuality of textiles, its intimacy and its narrative content.
All the fabrics in my work are hand dyed, and I employ simple printing techniques to create the original one-off fabrics used in my work. I love simple resist techniques such as folding and tieing, having fallen in love with the indigo cloth of West Africa. I tend to work in fairly simple colour contrasts, though the cloth I use is often complex in the colours they contain. Stitching, both by machine and hand, is an important element, as is the creation of texture. My work is much inspired by the Australian landscape.
In the past 7 years, I have been curating travelling exhibitions of the work of Australian Quilting Artists. These exhibitions have travelled mostly in Europe and the Middle East. I also teach widely, especially in Europe, as I speak fluent Dutch and some quilting French and German. Recently, I have won a prize with my quilt 'View From My Studio' in the Concours International at le Carrefour Europeen du patchwork. The piece was a whole cloth quilt which I dyed and stitched entirely by machine

Marion is a Scottish artist living and working in a tiny village in Norfolk, UK with four cats, lots of art supplies, sundry musical instruments, including a lute, and a very understanding spouse. She was introduced to Lutradur by Dijanne, several years ago, immediately fell in love with it, and has made it the focus of her textile work ever since. She also uses it in her mixed media and altered art work, and intends to extend that to using Lutradur as a base for paintings.
Her work has always featured texture and colour; learning to paint has also introduced an interest in line, particularly drawing with stitch.
Marion's work has been exhibited in the UK, Europe and the USA. She has demonstrated and taught at quilt shows, including the Scottish Quilt Championships and ExpoMagicQuilt in Lyon, and is available to give talks and workshops; email for more details (artmixter@tiscali.co.uk). She is currently working towards an exhibition in October 2008 in Norfolk, and is about to begin her first solo book. An avid blogger, her work can be found online in several places, including;

    Truthfully, what it needed is a "getting started" pack of some lutrador and the appropriate color agents. Cause I've tried it (a stiff, thick form I could find), with what I own (dyes, paints) and been sorely disappointed.
