Get Yourself Over Here

Queensland is the "sunshine state" and as the saying goes it's beautiful one day and perfect the next. There is so much to see and do here that you simply can't get bored. The focus of this lens is to group together some of the key attractions that Queensland has to offer. To include everything, such as beaches, small country towns and national parks would take forever, so we will just have to keep all that for future lenses.

Attracted to Queensland

Here's a brief outline of some of the attractions that can be found in Queensland.
  • The Ettamogah Pub, Bruce Highway, Sunshine Coast. When driving up the Bruce Highway from Brisbane you will have to do a double take as you pass this pub. It is based on cartoons drawn by Ken Maynard and boasts of being the most photographed pub in the world. If you choose to go make sure that you keep your eye out for the signs as the exits from the highway are easy to miss.
  • Lone Pine Sanctury, Brisbane. In a good location, only about 15 minutes from the heart of Brisbane, Lone Pine provides the perfect opportunity for visitors to experience Australia's unique fauna.
  • Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame, Longreach. This is a long way from Brisbane but for anyone interested in the outback it's well worth the visit. It celebrates the history and life of the outback.
  • Australia Zoo, Beerwah, Sunshine Coast. Crikey, look at those crocs! The small family zoo that the Irwin family started has grown into a world wide phenomenon. This is the base for all the conservation activities undertaken by the Irwin Family.
  • Whale Watching, Hervey Bay. This is not one that you go to a park and pay an entry fee but it is well worth doing. There are many boats working out of Hervey Bay to take locals and visitors alike out to see the annual migration of these majestic animals. If you plan on going in August, try and time your trip around the Whale Festival and parade.
  • Sunshine Plantation, Woombye, Sunshine Coast. Widely known as the "Big Pineapple" it is a must see for anyone trying to do a tour of Australia's "Big Things". For others it's just a massive pineapple plantation where you can learn a bit about the pineapple industry and have a great fruit salad. It certainly makes a welcome break on the drive from Brisbane and the kids love it.
  • Sarina Sugar Mill, Sarina. The sugar mill is the primary industry in the small town of Sarina (just outside Mackay) and they have built a working mini mill on the doorstep to show the public the processes involved. The mill is literally mini but still worth a visit. All the elements involved in crushing are demonstrated. They also have a mini distillery where they make their own rum based liquors which can be sampled (and then bought).
