My Review of the Flip Ultra
I heard about the Flip Video cameras by Pure Digital when they first came out but waited till the price dropped. I bought a Flip Ultra in April 2008 from Amazon and posted 100 videos to my account on YouTube within three months.
My Favorite Things About the Flip Ultra
- Good Quality Video - Excellent in low light and the microphone is very good up to about 6 feet
- Easy to Use - Several times I've handed it off to someone and they're talking video within 15 seconds
- Integrated Software - Makes it easy to prepare video and post on YouTube
- AA Batteries - I don't have mess with a rechargable. AA's are cheap and available everywhere
- 60 Minutes - 60 minutes of recording time is plenty for most situations

Flip Mino
I haven't used a Mino but the reviews on Amazon and YouTube are positive. 40% smaller is good but I'm not sure about the rechargeable battery. I tend to be kind to electronics and operate them for many years. I'm not convinced that a non-replaceable rechargeable battery is going to last that long. (This is also my big hang up with the iPhone.)

This tripod doesn't handle a standard mini-DV camera but works magnificently with the light-weight Flip. The legs can be squeezed together to act as a handle that helps stabilize hand held shots.

Flip Video Underwater Case for 1st Generation Flip Ultra Camcorders
I don't have one yet but several Amazon reviews say it doesn't work underwater and leaks. But it may be just fine for kayaking and other outdoor activities where it may get wet but won't be submerged.

Zoom H2 Handy Portable Stereo Recorder
Since the Flip microphone doesn't work well beyond 6 feet, I'm looking at portable recorders. For my needs I'm considering the Zoom H2 since it can also act as a USB mic for a computer.
