While we often choose our furniture based on the primary function we want it to serve, we can often get much more than we bargained for, if we shop smart. If we need somewhere for a child to sleep, we buy a bed, right? But then the bed is just that - a bed. A low loft bed can provide you with a multifunctional piece of furniture and it can even be a source of fun for your child.

Low loft beds are available with themes, tents, slides and storage. Your child's bed can become a play centre with a tented area for fun and to hide away toys. A tidy bedroom without it being a chore! If you are particularly tight on space you might prefer a low loft bed with drawers underneath the bed for storage. As I have said there are a number of benefits to choosing a low loft bed for your child. I will focus here on the features and benefits of a low loft bed.

1. Height
A low loft bed is lower in height than a traditional loft or bunk bed - I know Einstein eat your heart out! This is an advantage for younger kids who are perhaps not so confident with heights. The level of the lower loft bed will be less intimidating for a younger child. Generally it is advised that bunk beds are suitable for children over the age of six and as kids develop at different rates, please be sure that your child is happy with the climb to bed.

2. Theme
If you are creating a themed bedroom for your child there are lots of decorative items to buy. If the bed you choose is a castle fit for a fairy princess or indeed a king, this will provide a substantial feature piece for your child's bedroom theme. You won't need to spend lots of money on other decorative items to create the effect you want - your choice of bed will do most of the work for you. Often a good part of the theme is created by a tent like structure which can often be removed as your child gets older.

3. Multifunctional
As I have said low loft beds come in different configurations. Some with a tent or a slide can provide a central play area for when your child's friends come over. Others will give you additional storage drawers or shelves below the bed. We all know how much stuff kids accumulate!

When you decide to buy a low loft bed, there are just a couple of things you should bear in mind before you make your final purchase.

1) Have you decided what features are important to you? Storage, shelving, theme etc.
2) Have you checked the dimensions of the bed to ensure it fits in the space you have?
3) Have you checked if it comes complete with a mattress or if you need to purchase it separately?
4) Do you need to buy a new bed linen set to match the bed size and style or do you already have something that will do?
5) If you are buying online, does your chosen supplier provide free shipping or are there additional charges?

Now all you have to do is figure out what you are going to do with the extra space you will have!
