Then you realize as you're looking out at your lawn at 9:30 PM and realize, "Lights! Landscaping lights are what is missing!" So you start looking at your lighting options.
I'm sure you have come across low voltage outdoor lighting if you have started looking at different lighting options. Low voltage is a great option. You can pretty much place your lighting fixtures anywhere, use the electricity from your home to power your lights, and choose from a large variety styles. It truly is a no lose situation.

1. Transformer - It supplies the electricity for the system. It converts your home's electrical current from a volatile 120 volts to a much safer 12 volts.
2. Low Voltage Lamp - This is the actually light source. The cable from the transformer runs to the lamp and powers it.
3. Low Voltage Cable - The cable transmits electricity from the transformer to the lamp. The sealed, weather resistant cable is available in various lengths (100 to 200 ft.). The gauge for your cable comes in 12-, 14-, and 16-gauge sizes. The required gauge for your lighting is determined by the wattage of your system:

Installation:
1. Map out your landscape design on paper to get a general feeling of how you want everything to look like.
2. Buy your lighting system and lay out the wiring according to your diagram to figure out where you will have to dig the shallow trenches. You will see exactly where you will and will not (driveways, tree roots, walkways, etc.) be able to lay wire and really firm up your design plans.
3. Start digging, connect the wiring to your low voltage lamps, and bury your wiring.
4. Have tall glass of lemonade and enjoy your new lights.
