Help!.....How Can I Get a Lower Handicap?

The quest for a lower handicap is a constant part of most players' golf game. But golf has the misfortune to be one of the most frustrating of all games. When things aren't going right on the course, it can leave the average golfer feeling pretty down. But, help is at hand.....

Just by following a few basic tips you can virtually guarantee to lower your golf handicap within a few short weeks. Follow these three essential tips and you will soon see a consistent improvement in your game and on your scorecard.

Tip 1 for a Lower Handicap - Get Practicing

This may sound fairly obvious but it's amazing how many golfers just arrive at the golf course, get their clubs out of the car and head straight to the first tee, take 2 practice swings and then drive off. And all this without so much as having picked up a golf club since the end of their last full round two weeks ago or even longer. And they wonder why they can't achieve a lower handicap!

Now, whilst everyone has less free time these days, the best golf tip is to practice as much as possible. Of course, not everyone can get to their local golf course for a round everyday, or even to a driving range, but you can still work on your swing in the privacy of your own home, preferably with the aid of a mirror so you can more easily analyse and improve your movement. You can chip balls in your back garden or practice putting on your living room carpet.

Just do something on a regular basis - even the smallest amount of daily practice will help develop your golf muscle memory and enable you to lower your golf handicap.

Tip 2 for a Lower Handicap - Focus on Your Shorter Game

Ben Hogan once famously said

"You drive for show and you putt for dough!"

There is certainly a lot of truth in this - it is much easier to ruin an otherwise good round of golf by fluffing a few chip shots or missing a couple of short putts, than by hitting a few less than accurate drives.

You can spend stacks of time on the driving range and practicing your swing, but good scores are made on and around the green and you use your putter more often than any other club.

Improving your putting is the fastest way to enable you to achieve a lower handicap. For myself, there are some days when my tee shots hardly ever find the fairway but I still achieved a good score because I was holing putts. Fortunately, the short game is easier to practice in your own garden, and you'll see consistently better results on the actual course within just a few weeks.

Tip 3 for a Lower Handicap - Effective Preparation

It is often said that what separates a winner from a loser is how much they practice and how much preparation they make before the actual round of golf. This applies to golf as much as any other sport and, unless we are fortunate to have been blessed with an incredible amount of natural talent and ability for the game, this rule will apply to us as much as to anyone else.

If you treat every round like a professional would you will start to see the way to a lower golf handicap.

Make sure you warm up properly, spend some time on the range or in the nets just before your game and focus on a positive mental attitude. If you follow a similar routine every time you play a round you will soon see consistent results.

But remember, golf is a game to be enjoyed so be careful not to take it too seriously that it starts to affect the rest of your life - you'll soon run out of playing partners if you forget this.
