Try these techniques on your hospital bill
Always review your bill. Scrutinize each and every line item on your billing statement to catch double billings, multiple charges for the same description and varying dollar amounts for that description. Billing errors occur a lot more than you think.Be wary of words such as "kits". A kit should have all that is needed for a procedure. Ask what is contained in a kit and what it is used for. Also be
sure to research the kit, some manufacturers don't suggest using other components except what is already in the kit.
Also check your bill for solutions, since Medicare will not reimburse for solution used to mix other drugs or used to keep access open. Be watchful of 50 ml, 100 ml and 250 ml bags of fluid.
Another tip is to check for supplies that are inherent in the procedure. For example a CT (Computed Tomography) with contrast, you cannot perform the procedure and not use contrast. Most times Medicare will disallow this charge and if the government doesn't pay why should you. Radiological procedures are the most likely candidate for this error.
One that may be the most prevalent errors is routine versus chargeable supplies. Routine supplies are not supposed to be billed. In general if all patients would expect to use the supply it is routine. For example all patients admitted to a telemetry floor would be on a heart monitor, unless specifically ordered by the physician. Also each room would likely have suction, basins, tissues and bath supplies, so those supplies are not billed.
Remember also to ask questions. When in front of the billing specialist, ask what certain charges are, what makes up a kit, why is another drape needed. Ask what makes up a specific billing code. Even ask what the billing codes cost. You may be able to discover where the hospital placed an incorrect billing code on your bill. The chances of transposing a number or mistyping a code are very real in our world. One patient found that he was charged for an impossible procedure, a hysterectomy, because someone miscoded a billing entry.
