Loyola University Chicago: Chicago's Jesuit University

Loyola University Chicago is a private Jesuit Catholic university established in Chicago in 1870. It was founded by the Roman Catholic religious order of the Society of Jesus, and is named after their patron saint, Saint Ignatius of Loyola.  Located on Chicago's lake front in the Rogers Park neighborhood, Loyola is perhaps the most picturesque campus in Chicago.  Read on to learn more about Loyola University Chicago.

Loyola's first incarnation was in 1870 as the St. Ignatius College on Chicago's West Side. In 1908 the School of Law was established. St. Ignatius College changed its name to Loyola University in 1909, at which time it also added the Stritch School of Medicine. In 1923 the now closed Chicago College of Dental Surgery was combined with Loyola University. In 1934 West Baden College affiliated itself with Loyola University, later to be known as the Bellarmine School of Theology then the Jesuit School of Theology in Chicago. Loyola established the Loyola University Chicago School of Nursing in 1935. Loyola then opened the Rome Center for Liberal Arts in 1962, the first American university-sponsored program in Rome. 1969 saw the establishment of the Loyola University Chicago School of Education and the opening of the Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. In 1979 the School of Nursing was renamed the Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing. The most recent expansion was the 1991 acquisition of neighboring Mundelein College from the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
