Lime Springs, Iowa, USA: The little town that could!

Ranked #16,296 in Culture & Society, #328,031 overall

Just south of the Minnesota border, about 1/4 of the way across the state from the Mississippi River, is a small town which is going places: Lime Springs.

Iowa has hundreds of towns with populations of under 1,000. Nearly all have good, honest, hard-working people living in them. But many are dying, as indicated by a decrease in population and an increase in empty buildings on main street.

An exception is Lime Springs. What's different about this little town?

Several things. I'll try to mention a few of them here.

1. Location

The town is conveniently located within commuting distance of several larger cities, the most notably one being Rochester, MN, world-famous for its Mayo Clinic. The medical and other industry in Rochester provides employment for a wide variety of skills. Several of their workers have found Lime Springs a great place to live.

2. Schools

Lime Springs High School burned to the ground in 1960. However, there is still an elementary school in the town. Principle Rob Hughes makes sure that every student is treated as a valuable individual and gets the best education possible. Rob himself is a product of Lime Springs and the local school system.

The high school for Lime Springs residents is Crestwood HS, located in Cresco, Iowa, the county seat of Howard County.

3. Transportation

US Highway 63, a major north/south highway, goes within one mile of the town. This gives easy access to the Twin Cities of Minneapolis/St. Paul and Rochester in Minnesota. In Iowa, it leads directly to Waterloo, where it joins the Interstate system for easy connection to most anyplace.

 4. Labor

Traditionally, Lime Springs has been a farming community. That means, in general, that the people know how to work and insist on giving a good days work for a days pay.

Nationally-known Featherlite Trailers has a huge plant just a few miles south of Lime Springs. They know where to get good workers!

5. Activities

You might think there's not much to do in a small Iowa town. Well, in this town there are lots of things to do!

What town of 500 people has a public swimming pool? Lime Springs does. You can check out some of the other dozens of activities here: http://limesprings.com/thingstodo.php

Just over the Border and a wee east! I am in New Ulm, MN and working on a 'city page', it is fun to see the other small towns making a presence on squidoo! So many rural area communities are filled with history and interest, I like to say "we're small, but that's not all". Thanks for a peek at LS!
