Marvel Super Heroes is a Street Fighter Alpha-style fighting game that features characters from the classic Marvel Comics lineup. Four characters (Psylocke, Wolverine, Juggernaut, and Magneto) return from Capcom's previous comic-based fighter, X-Men: Children of the Atom. New characters include Captain America, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Hulk, and more. It was an exciting arcade game, but the PlayStation version lacks any real punch and falls flat by comparison.
The game differs from the pack via its inclusion of gems that litter the landscape. You can pick up the gems and use them on command, resulting in brief power-ups to the character's speed, power, life, etc. Other than that, it's just basic Street Fighter action, complete with fireballs, dragon punches, and the like. The arcade version was a great game and differed enough from the Street Fighter and X-Men games to be entertaining. The PlayStation version has virtually the same gameplay.
Graphically, MSH looks all right. The characters and backgrounds are large and colorful. But the game also produces an awful lot of slowdown, and it's missing quite a few frames of character and background animation. The slowdown is even more apparent when picking larger characters such as Juggernaut and Blackheart. The music in MSH is fairly good and the speech is nice and crisp, unlike the Saturn version, which produced tinny, annoying sound effects.
The PlayStation version of MSH is tolerable, but it lost the arcade game's soul in the translation. The missing frames and slowdown don't help much, either. While I found the arcade game a blast, this version just seemed dull and boring. Whether this can be attributed to the translation itself or the fact that several, mostly better, Capcom fighters have been released in arcades since Marvel, I don't know. Rent it first and see if it's your thing, and for all of you who own both a PlayStation and a Saturn, you're slightly better off getting the Saturn version, as it doesn't slow down as much, has better color, and more frames of animation. --Jeff Gerstmann

Decent translation to the PS1, fun overall.![]()
Marvel Superheroes was another game that came out of the post-Street Fighter 2 blaze of glory days from Capcom. It came out near the same time as the Darkstalkers series and the Street Fighter Alpha series, and not surprisingly, there are a number of similarities between all those games, especially in terms of graphics.
This game plays like a slightly hyper version of Street Fighter with a few twists. The wahoo-super jumps allowed to you go a good 50 scale feet up in the air and do all kinds of stuff while up there, and the super moves were similar to those in Street Fighter Alpha, although graphically more flashy. The game came included with a number of "gems" you could collect and activate during the game for minor bonuses.
The fun part, though, was simply being able to pick Marvel characters (as they appeared in the mid-90s anyway; as they kept using those sprites for years and years they started looking more and more dated) in a good fighting game.
The game comes with a few unfortunate minor nitpicks. 1) A the follow-up to X-men: Children of the Atom, the roster was surprisingly sparse. Only four characters return from X-men, two characters are bosses (Dr. Doom and Thanos), two characters are really quite obscure (Blackheart and Shuma-Gorath) and that means that really only a handful of new characters are added to the game: Spider-man, Hulk, Captain America and Iron Man. A broader selection of characters would have been nice. If we had all the Marvel characters that were later to feature in Marvel vs. Capcom 2, that would have been *WONDERFUL*. 2) The Playstation struggles with ports of these types of games, really. This one isn't bad, but there are some notable slowdowns while playing. Some animation frames are missing too, but you've gotta be looking pretty hard to spot those, for the most part.
Justice Prevails!![]()
This is a great beat-em-up with a fun twist on the usual engine; this being that your new super-powers and infinity gems!
The characters are selected from the most fighter-friendly gallery of Marvel, this including the little mentioned Blackheart, and the overly mentioned Spider-Man.
Also fun, is that in this game you can fly (certain characters) or at least jump high enough to make your enemies dizzy. Infact, ariel combat is probably the best part of this game; especially after watching movies like Hero or Advent Children.
The characters are suprisingly well-balanced, and fun (even Captain America, whom I'm going to hack to become "Comrade Canada" at some point, once he no longer amuses me...) And the gameplay is a good precurser to the Smash-Bros style fighter.
Infact, the game reminds me a lot of Smash Bros.
Infact, if you could throw people off-screen, I'd say it WAS Smash Bros, with Marvel chars.
Hmm.
Until next time:
Justice Prevaiils!
my three favorite marvel characters in one game=classic![]()
Ironman, Doctor Doom and Magneto, in one game, all 3 playable(doom you need a code for, but still), both awesome.
sure, this option is also availabe in the newest installment to the X-Men Legends series(Magneto and Ironman). but in order to get Tony Stark you have to make it four fifths of the way through the game until you can play as him.
this game is, without a doubt, a classic among the 2D fighters. even up there with the first two Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter II.
why they bothered with Psylocke, i'll never know. they could have put, say, Sabretooth in...or even Thor.
