Who is Luciano Pavarotti: His Life and Music

How I Came to Love Luciano Pavarotti

I still remember the first time I really heard Pavarotti sing.  Growing up, there was always music playing in the house, but this time I heard the music and was impressed and mesmerized by what I heard. I was about eight.

Actually, it was a performance that included Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras, the Three Tenors singing at the Baths of Caracalla.  My dad loved Pavarotti and was watching the concert on PBS.  As soon as it went on break my dad started belting out his own version of the songs, just for me.

I sat with my father through the entire performance, when it ended I remember asking dad if we could go see him.  Dad dissapointed me when he said that Pavarotti no longer sang opera in Chicago, it was true.  The man who inspired my love for opera never sang in the Opera House where I called home, at least not after I discovered him.

Music is capable of being so compelling because of the pure, unrestrained emotions the singer puts into a piece.  I never saw a performance by Pavarotti where I didn't feel something.  He always sang with power behind his words, be it the power of sadness, of joy or anger.

When I heard Pavarotti I learned to hear music, but I heard it by allowing myself to feel it.  That was how I came to love music, came to see music in everything, live music with every emotion.

"If music is central to a person's life, it can be something very special and life-affirming."

This is What It's All About

This is probably my absolute favorite clip of one of Pavarotti's charity concerts, because it shows the impact people can have on others. Being part of something so positive rubs off on those around you and becomes contagious. I hope the benefit concerts that Pavarotti organized continue in his memory.

The Concert by The Three Tenors is my absolute favorite performance, it really is a must have. Verdi is my favorite composer, and Rigoletto is my favorite opera. Pavarotti performing in it is icing on the cake!

The Central Park Concert was one of Pavarotti's last and one of my favorites, the best of Pavarotti CD brings it all together.

I included the book for the same reason I bought it myself. Even though the author is the ex-manager, it reveals a lot of interesting stuff about this super talented man, the book increased my respect for Pavarotti and the work he did.

Some of these clips are from the dvds I listed above, and others have stuck with me over the years. The clip from Rigoletto, is Le Dona e mobile, my favorite song in the opera.

Pavarotti loved music, and you can feel it in every one of these videos. I love it when he sings with other artists, like Bobbi Brown and U2- he was so much more than opera.

Singing For A Cause

I have always been taught that you can use any talent you possess to do good. Pavarotti was a great example of this. Every year he held charity concerts, Pavarotti and Friends, to raise money for United Nations causes. The concerts were both entertaining and very successful.

Here are clips of some of my favorite performances from Pavarotti's charity concerts.
