Time for a reality check!
Are you dreaming? This is the typical question used when performing a reality check. Since a lucid dream is really just a dream where your mind is conscious while you are asleep, the path to having a lucid dream is to realize that you are dreaming. After that you can have fun flying around and doing who knows what with the dream characters your mind invents. If you get really good at it, you can visit far away places and have epic adventures.

Reading is hard.
Most people can't read text in their dreams. No one is sure why this is. Many reality checks involve written words, such as the question "Am I dreaming?" This might seem counter-intuitive, but it is actually an ingenious way of getting around the problem. If you look at a word or set of words every day for a long time, then eventually you are likely to perform this action in your dreams as well. If you look at whatever it is your words are written on and find yourself unable to read them, then you will know that you are most likely dreaming.

Reality Check methods
If you want to do reality checks, it helps to have some sort of aid. Preferably, this will be something that you can have on hand at all times, and which you can train yourself to check often.
Watch method: To use a watch as a reality check device, look at your watch often. Look away, then look back at the watch. Has the time on the watch changed to something ridiculous or nonsensical? Then you may be dreaming!
"Is this a dream?" method: Wear something that says 'Is this a dream?' or something similar. Look at it often, making sure to read it. Can you read it at all? If you can, you probably aren't dreaming.

It is possible to do a reality check without having to deal with questions about what you are doing. Reality checks tend to work better if they have something to do with lucid dreaming, because they will keep you mindful of why you are doing the checks. This snazzy shirt will also proclaim to the world that you are a lucid dreamer, which is an added bonus. (Considering that some think it is a sort of magical power, you might gain a few admirers.)
It is all relative
Everyone has different ways of thinking, and this especially applies to lucid dreams. Doing a reality check as I described may work for you, or you may need to do some tweaking with it. The best thing to do is experiment and see what happens.
If you record your dreams, you are likely to start remembering them in detail. This will also encourage you to be aware of your waking mind while you are dreaming, because your brain will have to train itself to remember what was happening while you were in REM sleep.
Once you have a lucid dream, you will be able to figure out what triggers it, and then try to make that trigger happen more often. For example, I have discovered that lucid dreams are triggered when I step through doorways or fall through holes. In the past I was afraid to do either of these things in my dreams, so I have worked to overcome them. Now I have lucid dreams more often.
