International Jobs: More Than Just a Lucrative Financial Bonanza
Imagine yourself with a job in your top international destination, doing the job you have always wanted. Or stretch it even more. Imagine yourself working in several of your favourite international destinations doing the job you like best and get paid an enormous sum for your expertise. Many people fantasize but when push comes to shove, most are stay-at-homes and travel is part of vacation. But if you have skills, especially the ones that are sought after in today's job market, you are in.
International jobs are not as difficult to find as some make it sound. And once you're in and have shown your expertise, chances are you will forever abandon thoughts of doing a 9-5 job in the same old city the whole of your life. I am not saying this is bad but if you have itchy feet, you will get a chance to not just look at other cultures as a tourist, but participate in them as a co-worker and that is vastly different. This type of experience is like winning a new set of eyes and you'll never see the world in the same way again.
And with an international salary, return travel paid and the possibilities of a living allowance and other subsidies and even first class education for the kids, it is often a financial bonanza.
But it is more than just a financial bonanza. For your career, you'll have a chance at leadership and mentoring roles much sooner and these may be more satisfying than just staying in your usual cubbyhole.
If you have read this far, you may have the wanderlust so start dreaming. Your international job awaits you.

Working in international jobs
Have you?
How was your international job experience?
How would you describe it?
International Job Choices
What International Job Attracts You?

Do you want to work for multinational corporations? For non-government organizations? The International Agencies like the United Nations? On development projects, finance, business? Or as a diplomat? As an employee or as an independent consultant? Or as a teacher, a hotel manager, a chef or a butler? Or military assignments? Or as a sailor? Or, maybe, you want to go and open a restaurant, a boutique, or a business you have always wanted in a place you have always dreamed about.
Countless opportunities are out there waiting for you.
Concerns about international jobs?
Kids? Medical Facilities?

If you have kids, the experience will be a permanent reservoir of ideas and experiences that will never leave them. And with an international salary, return travel paid and the possibilities of a living allowance and even subsidized education for the kids, it is often a financial bonanza. If quality of education for children is a concern, you'll find the international schools in many countries have standards and expectations well beyond your local school and with the International Baccalaureate and other standards, the grades will be recognized when they come home.
Medical facilities? You get lots of help in many of these countries. You can fly to some of the best hospitals in an hour or two if it is not available in your country of choice. In fact, many international consultants, even when back working in their own countries, now use dental and other medical services in the countries they used to work. Not only would they get quality services, but also great holidays for less price.
Many companies provide family insurance as well. Make sure you discuss this with your employer before signing that contract.
How to Find International Job Opportunities
Start where you are at

Search closer to home. Check your present employer. If you are part of a multinational company, ask your HR department if there are any chances to work offshore. If there are none, time to think of being independent. Or, check out other companies in the same general line of business.
Do a search on the Internet. Start with recruitment sites specializing on international jobs. Look at the positions and bids advertised. Check out the contracts that have already been awarded and the job positions included. Read the terms of reference for these bids and contracts. Take note of the companies that bid and visit their sites.
Browse through international magazines and newspapers. Many of these magazines like The Economist or The International Herald Tribune advertise international positions and often detail the requirements for such. These will give you some ideas on what to focus on.

International Consulting Jobs
The World Bank and the Regional Development Banks
Constantly hiring consultants in various fields
Start here in your search. These banks loan to countries in their regions for development projects. You will read here the development plans of various countries, the big players there in terms of companies and organizations doing and bidding on projects. They also recruit individual consultants and procure goods and services. Check these sites out.
- Asian Development Bank
- Interested to become a consultant in Asia? This is your first stop. The Asian Development Bank funds hundreds of projects in almost all development areas: education, health, construction, governance, private sector development and other services. ADB lists all of the opportunities in its website. You can see all the companies bidding for these projects and you can send your resume to them so you can be part of their bids. You will then be in the company's database and many of them when the opportunity for your area of expertise come up, will contact you if you are interested. ADB also hires consultants directly and they publish the terms of reference for these asking for expressions of interest (EOI). Here, you put in your resume matching your experiences with the terms of reference. Some of these companies maybe close to where you live. Ask to meet with them and ask about other projects they are involved in. Get to know them better. They are always looking for consultants. Once you start working, the network expands and your fellow consultants will start recommending you to other bidders.
- African Development Bank
- Procurement contracts, international consulting job opportunities in Africa, and documents on development in Africa.
- InterAmerican Development Bank
- This bank is focused on the Americas. Chile and Brazil are on the go. Argentina as well. Don't miss out on these emerging economies.
- World Bank
- This is the giant squid of development banks. If you are not sure of your region of interest, check this one out. You will have an idea of where the growth is in international jobs and businesses.

Interesting international development project
Have a sense of what it takes
Development projects often hire consultants who are specialists in their field or project managers who will be responsible for the implementation of the project. Opportunities like these abound. Do your search and you will be surprised at the number of projects and agencies and organizations involved.
Here is one sample of a small project with the Asian Development Bank-Japan Fund for Poverty Alleviation. This is focused on post harvest technology and skills bridging program for the rural poor. Though small, this project offers opportunities for those interested in post-harvest technologies. This gives you an idea that there is a need for this in Cambodia, where this project is located. So, if your company is in this business and plans to expand internationally, you can sniff around. If you are into developing learning materials, maybe, you can visit the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training in your trip to Cambodia and see how you can follow up on this opportunity.
