Lucrezia Borgia

Lucrezia Borgia (1480-1519) was an Italian noblewoman and an important person in the Italian Renaissance.

She was the daughter of Pope Alexander VI. From 1505, as the Duchess of Ferrara, she held sway over a brilliant court with many artists and poets, including the poet Ariosto.

Lucrezia Borgia's life was portrayed in a drama by Victor Hugo and an opera by Donizetti.

What the Borgias Gave Us

"In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, bloodshed -- they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance.

In Switzerland they had brotherly love, 500 years of democracy and peace and what did that produce...? The cuckoo clock."

-- Orson Welles
