Lucy Lawless - Music from the New Zealand Actress and Singer

If you're familiar with the fantasy TV series from the 1990's, Xena: Warrior Princess, or the recent hit TV show Spartacus: Blood and Sand, then you'll know Lucy Lawless best as either the warrior princess herself, or the Roman wife of Batiatus, Lucretia.

But did you know that the Kiwi actress is also a singer? Many Xena fans have enjoyed watching their heroine in concert in such locations as LA, San Francisco and London. Lucy has performed various energetic themed sets, from rock to country.

I was lucky enough to see Lucy live in London, back in May 2008, when she appeared in concert at the Carling Academy, during the first ever official Xena convention that was being held nearby.

How Lucy Got Started in Singing

Lucy Lawless on Celebrity Duets in 2006

Lucy Lawless Celebrity Duets Promo ImageAt school, Lucy was always picked to play the main part in plays and musicals. With a talented singing voice, after graduating high school in 1985, she set her sights on becoming an opera singer, and signed up for private voice lessons at Auckland University while studying languages. But a structural approach to singing killed Lucy's enjoyment and natural urge to sing. Instead, she found work in Auckland modeling and acting.

Apart from a bit of singing on stage at annual Xena conventions, Lucy did not sing professionally until 2006, when she took part in the American reality show, Celebrity Duets. She came second in the competition.

How did Lucy get involved with Celebrity Duets?
"My friend Eric Vitros, who is a famous singing teacher, they had approached him, and they approached my agents, who turned it down without consulting me because I don't do reality television, at least not before. Finally, Eric said they keep bothering me to get you to do this reality show, and I am like, what is it? The chance to sing with Smokey Robinson, are you kidding me'.' I totally want to do it! I told my agents to make the deal. My reps thought it would make me look tacky. I was like, I don"t care This is such a challenge."

What did Lucy think of not winning Celebrity Duets?
"I think there was something in my nature not ready to be a winner. I am a newcomer. I feel so lucky that I could go out and take it, and that is a fatal flaw. I am over that, by the way, but at the time, looking back because I was just learning to sing then, and it was only after the very last night and all the judging was done when I was able to sing a song of my choice on my own in my key when something happened and just broke in my head and I was, like, I stumbled on my thing when I sang Don't Tell Mama with the go-go dancers, when I went, shit, this is me, this is authentic to me. I just thank that show. I just learned to sing last November, and I have been doing it ever since."

Official - Lucy Lawless rocked the house!

Lucy may be an actress first and foremost, but she's pretty darn good at singing too, and she sure knows how to put on an incredible show! I was pleasantly surprised by just how good she sounded live.

The gig in London was intimate enough to be able to get a great view from wherever you were stood, but not so small as to be pokey and squashed.

Lucy's easy banter with the audience between songs was equally great, and fans were treated to a rock theme with covers including songs from Bonnie Tyler, Jet, Jeff Buckley, REM, Meredith Brooks and more.

SET LIST:

* I Was Made For Loving You
* When Doves Cry
* G.L.O.R.I.A.

Lucy Lawless American Concerts

Lucy Lawless Come to Mama PosterLucy has played many concerts in America, most of which have been at The Roxy in Hollywood.

The concerts are usually held in conjunction with the annual Xena conventions held by Creation Entertainment, so that Xena fans can attend both events.

I will be adding set lists, photos, links and more from the various other concerts to this lens, so please check back for updates!

Lucy hasn't performed at any concerts since 2009, but hopefully this is due to her current commitment to her role as Lucretia in Spartacus, meaning she may return to her music in the near future!
