Lucy Stone: A woman ahead of her time
Four reasons to love Lucy Stone
American suffragist
- She was upset that her brothers could get a formal education, but she could not. Her father justified that action by his interpretation of the bible. Lucy Stone decided that she would learn Hebrew and Greek as an adult so she could translate the bible properly.(Because the sections that say that men should rule over women just have to be wrong.)
- In 1843, Lucy saved enough money to go to Oberlin College in Ohio - the first college in the country to admit women and blacks. In 1847 she became the first woman in Massachusetts to receive a college degree.
- First recorded American woman to keep her own last name upon marriage.
- She gave many speeches on anti-slavery and feminism. She got big crowds, but she also got lots of people upset with her. There are stories of prayer books being thrown at her.
- Her speech in 1850 was listed as a reason Susan B. Anthony started working for the suffrage cause.
- She was the first person in New England to be cremated.
