Unique Luggage Tags - Find That Luggage Easily

Have you ever been frustrated by trying to find your suitcase in a sea of other similar bags on a crowded luggage carousel? Cruise terminals can be even worse, with row up on row of bags that you must look through to find yours.

Some people tie a length of red yarn, or a yellow pom pom on each of their bags to help them easily spot them. BUT what if someone else decided to use a piece of red yarn on their black bag? Could happen, you know!

This lens will show you the solution, which is to make your own unique luggage tags and/or handle wraps. Some involve sewing, and some do not. Anyone can make their own unique luggage tags in one way or another. See which of these ways is your favorite.

For the Seamstress

Even a beginning seamstress should be able to follow the directions in these videos. I did! The luggage tag shown in the intro photo is one I made. I just went to the fabric store and looked around until I found a fabric I liked, which happened to be a ;ighthouse print on cotton. So, go, pick a great printed fabric that really appeals to you, and get started.

Here's the video that will get you started. And I am here to tell you, It's a good video - IT WORKS! I tend to have a hard time with sewing, but I followed this video, and ended up actually making luggage tags. YIPPEE, I did it!
There are actually several in the series - one for each step in the process. Here's the first:

Make a Matching Handle Wrap

After making the luggage tag, I decided it would be nice to have a matching handle wrap, but there wasn't a video for that. So are instructions for how I did it:

1 - Cut out a) two pieces of fabric, about 5.5" x 7.5" and b) one piece of pelon one inch smaller each way

2 - Press the pelon to the wrong side of one of the pieces of fabric.

3 - With right sides facing, sew the two pieces of fabric almost all the way around, leaving an opening in one end for turning. Use a 1/4" to 1/2" seam.

4 - Turn the piece right side out, fold in the raw edges of the opening, and seam it up.

5 - Press.

6 - Sew a finishing stitch all the way around, about 1/4" from the edge, for strength. It also gives the piece a more finished look.

7 - Cut two strips of press-on Velcro, and press one on to opposite sides of each each end. making sure to match them up.

If you Don't Sew

If you don't want to sew your own unique luggage tags, there are some other options, which involve simply affixing things to inexpensife plastic tags. More about that in a minute.
But first, if you'd prefer the path of least resistance - an online purchase - here are some interesting choices in luggage tags, luggage spotters, and handle wraps from Amazon.

Spruce 'em up with Scissors and Glue

For a quick and easy luggage tag project that even the kids can do, all you need is:

Inexpensive plastic luggage tags (available at most discount stores)
Glue that is recommended for use on plastic
Heavy construction paper or thin vinyl fabric

Cut favorite shapes out of the construction paper or vinyl, and glue them on the plain backs of the luggage tags.
After printing your information on the id cards, glue mataching or coordinating shapes on the plain side of the cards.
Insert the cards with the glued on shaps facing out.

Even Easier Custom Bag Tags

In my Zazzle Gallery, CruiseReady on Zazzle, I've designed some one and a quarter inch by two and three eighth inch stick-on labels that you can just affix to the plain back of the luggage tag and id card to turn those inexpensive plastic luggage tags (like the ones shown in the previous section) into custom designed ones.

Here are some examples:

You know, your custom designs could enjoy a worldwide audience if you travel frequently and let you luggage stay on the carousel a little longer than usual ... hopefully, it is first off and everybody can see your designs! Love it.

Great idea for that handle wrap too! I definitely will be trying this in the future. My husband has been traveling a lot for work. We have used the ribbon and yarn trick. He got so frustrated he took bright red duct tape and put a strip on every side of the luggage. LOL

What a great idea. Will try to sew some luggage tags, it is always so difficult to find your suitcase on the conveyer belt.

Great ideas. I always hate trying to figure out which black suitcase is mine from the sea of black suitcases.
