Luling, Texas

Luling is a small town east of San Antonio and south of Austin. It's famous for its oil fields and watermelons.

I've used a Google map to locate some of the areas of interest. The map is called Let's Go to Luling, Texas!

Zip Code: 78648

Luling Oil City

Oil was discovered in 1922 and by 1926, over 31 million barrels had been produced. The Luling Oil field is 7.5 miles long by a half mile wide. It runs in a northeasterly direction. Read more about the geology of the field and a 1957 Report about the Luling Branyon Field.

The Central Texas Oil Patch Museum is well worth the visit. They ask for a small donation. I saw my very first drill bit there. Plus there's a really nice big map on a table with the oil wells located. You can clearly see the way the field is long and narrow and goes diagonally across Luling.

Luling Oil Pumps

Luling still has about 200 operating pump jacks. I've seen many of them as we drive along route 183. A few years ago, the City of Luling commissioned an artist to decorate some of the pump jacks and they're really fun to look at.
This web site has nice photos of a few of them.

Luling is a great place to watch trains. They go right down the middle of the city. Many of them are very long because they carry so much freight. Nice lens!
