Lumineers vs. Porcelain veneers
Everyone wants that brite shining movie star smile, what looks better than white straight teeth? There are some new procedures developed, that could be the answer for anyone afraid of porcelain veneers.
Traditionally porcelain veneers are similiar to a crown, the tooth surface has to be roughed or ground down to accept the crown like cover, veneers do last up to 15 years and are more.
Almost impervious to stains, veneers, can straighten the look of crooked teeth. The disadvantage is the grinding down part! Most patients are reluctant to grind down a perfectly good tooth, I know I would be!
Unlike an actual crown, which would cover the entire tooth, a veneer will cover only the visible portion of the tooth. Although, much of the natural tooth remains in place, roughly .5 mm of the original tooth surface must be removed to allow enough space for the new veneer..
Both veneers and lumineers are made of thin porous porcelain.
Both cover only the portions of the teeth that are visible.
Both repair minor tooth imperfections.
Both give the appearance of straighter and can lengthen teeth.
Both can conceal stained or discolored fillings.
Both are somewhat stain proof.
Lumineers how ever are contact lens thin, most importantly, the surface of the tooth, is left alone! In most cases there is no removal of the surface of the tooth structure!
The first thing I learned, was that Lumineers aren't really much different from ordinary porcelain veneers! What makes them somewhat unique is that they're are super thin, and can be placed on your teeth without all the drilling and prep work associated with standard porcelain veneers.
This seems great right?
Well read below!
LUMINEERS DISADVANTAGES
Properly placing them requires artistic talent, to properly design the covering, for the shape and dtructure of your face. While there is no drilling on the teeth beforehand, certain parts of the designing design process actually become a bit more complicated, since the dentist is now confined to working, with the shape of the tooth the way they are. Color control, which is actually an area where generally, a standard dentist has the most trouble when they attempt to do a cosmetic procedure, it becomes more difficult since the veneer is thinner. Chroma, hue, translucency, color, depth, brightness, and highlights, all have to taken into account for the end result to be a beautiful smile!
While lumineers may be appropriate for some people. The first step is finding a qualified cosmetic dentist. While lumineers have many advantages, as with most cosmetic procedures, finding the right doctor is the key!
The problem with no tooth alteration, is that unless you have a very specific defect like a lot of gaps, or teeth that bend inward, and need to be built up to look normal. You can end up with a set of bulky, fake-looking teeth!
With regular porcelain veneers, you can remove as little as a half a millimeter from the tooth and replace it with porcelain so it looks natural. Typically, unprepared veneers\lumineers can simply look fake.
Apparently much of the good results are achieved with properation of the existing tooth structure, with lumineers you may need less preperation and may be less expensive. An improvement but the key is still in the details! Although a "no-prep" lumineer sounds attractive, better results, especilly long term durability can be better achieved if the tooth surface, is roughed up a bit.
