All Luminox watches undergo an additional manufacturing step that no other watch in the world requires. The Luminox self-powered illumination system is installed in each and every watch. It is a costly and time-consuming endeavor but its what makes Luminox watches special and different from all the other watches in the world. Each watch employs tiny self-powered micro gas lights, which have been developed by the world leader in the luminous compound industry. These micro gas lights called borosilicate glass capsules are installed into the hands, hour markers, and when necessary, bezels of our watches. The Luminox watch needs no external light source to "charge" the paint on the dial or hands in order to glow as do conventional luminous watches. They also do not require a push of a button to light the dial as do watches with electro luminescence. The US military has long recognized the advantages of micro gas light sources and their use.
The technical term for traser light is a Gaseous Tritium Light Source (GTLS) These low level light sources have very unique properties, they are unaffected by water, oil and most corrosive materials and require no external power source or exposure to light in order to work. They remain fail-safe and maintenance free and have a life in excess of 10-20 years.
Each traser light is a laser sealed borosilicate glass vial which has been coated internally with phosphor. In one single process the traser is sealed by a CO2 laser and injected with gaseous Tritium. The low energy electrons emitted by the Tritium, excite the phosphor and this creates a cold energy which produces a low level light without filaments or heat dissipation and no risk of fire or explosion.
The main thing is that there is a glow in the dark effect, so to see the time in complete darkness is very easy and does not require any power or light source. The military are keen on these watches for use by their people, as using this form of watch will not allow anyone to see where you are when checking the time in the dark, so giving away your position.
