Lunar Society Birmingham_A Heritage Success Model For Innovation and Prosperity USA

Ranked #15,336 in Culture & Society, #311,126 overall

Intro: Who were "Lunatiks" ?

The Lunar Society of Birmingham was a dinner club and informal learned society of prominent figures around mid-18th century through early 19th century. So called "Lunatiks" , included industrialists, natural philosophers and intellectuals, who met regularly between 1765 and 1813 in Birmingham, England.

At first called the Lunar Circle, "Lunar Society" became the formal name by 1775. The name arose because the society would meet during the full moon, as the extra light made the journey home easier and safer in the absence of street lighting. The members cheerfully referred to themselves as "lunarticks", a pun on lunatics. Venues included Erasmus Darwin's home in Lichfield, Matthew Boulton's home, Soho House, and Great Barr Hall.

Ben Franklin's Adoption of the Lunar Society Success Model for his "Junto Club" of fellow articians in Philadelphia

Ben Franklin's Example For Us Today ?

type=textFounding Father Ben Franklin, a corresponding member later, actually used this Lunar Circle "success model" likely, to create the Junto Club (known also as the "Leather Apron Club" at the age of 21, a club for self-improvement, mutual help, and articians like himself in Philadelphia. This was done after his return home from his first trip to London to buy equipment for a print shop at home.

One key achivements of the Junto was the establishment of the first public library ( books were far more expensive then. So, a 'Subscription Library" open to all in town was created) .

The Junto members have left a legacy of innovation that is still with us today. Also, William Small, the physcian and science teacher who inspired young Thomas Jefferson at College of Willam & Mary in Virgina, returned to England before the American Revolution started and joined the Lunar Circle.

Perhaps more than anyone else, the Scottish inventor, James Watts had an impact on America with his "Steam Engine" invention, than anyone else. In the next century, Railroads came to America from that early beginning and expanded westward from east to west in a rapid pace that helped catalyze expansion, innovation and prosperity in America as rapidly as nothing else in prior centuries.

Does this heritage "success model" of "Lunar Society" have vintage wisdom for us here in America in search of innovation & prosperity today and tomorrow ?

Answer: Yes, yes ! .

I guess the question has been answered...science and technology innovation has served us very well...those lunatics were just a little ahead of their time...they always are and we can be grateful for those very creative minds every day!

Excellent points here- well done. I teach entrepreneurship at George Washington University, lead a new health care venture, and recently published an entrepreneurial management book. We always need to look back and understand how yesterday's thinking really contained some jewels that can help us innovate today. Look forward to contributing here. Non-commercial community tv stations came into existence with the advent of the cable industry about 20 years ago. All CTV, often known as public access tv, are non-profit, non-commercial TV stations. CTV is available only at a particular community or rural region of a state.
