A Wolfish About Me

All about me. Well, as much as I'm going to put on the internet in one place, anyway. ;)

30-something mother of four, owner of various businesses over the years who set it all aside to be a stay-at-home-mom eight years ago, just sounds so dry and inadequate. Let me show you who I am through my different aspects of self, and the things I love.

Wolftyrs / Wolfsong - What's in a Name?

A few years ago my lifemate was playing the version of NeverWinter Nights that was run on AOL message boards. It looked interesting, so I created a character for it. This was my first AOL screen name, and created on his account. We named her Lune Wolftyrs. It was easier to just keep using the one account for all the message boards, including the parenting boards I frequented at the time. It was also less confusing, as I have one of those "flavor of the year" given names, of which there are generally several in any crowd and every variant of it already existed on my favorite board at least once. Lune was unique, and left no doubt who was being addressed.

So it was that my online name became Lune Wolftyrs. And my account here became wolftyrs as well.

In 2005 I suffered a kidney failure they didn't expect me to recover from. I was two days from my due date with my oldest son, who made it through just fine, thankfully. But for a while it was all they could do to keep me breathing. I had my newborn and my four-year-old daughter to live for, so I had to fight my way back. That experience, with its aftermath and healing, was a life changing experience, the smallest aspect of which was that the "tears" part of my online name no longer felt like a right fit for me, and I began to change it to "song", which did.

Other than here on Squidoo and in SquidU, where I'm still wolftyrs because I didn't want to give up my history for a new name, and other writings that predate my near death, I'm Lune Wolfsong everywhere I am on the web.

I created my icon, which I also use all over the web to help keep my presence quickly and easily identifiable. The misty tendrils from the wolf's mouth are not only meant to signify a wolf who dares to howl, but also to remind me of the power of our words.

She who dares not howl will not find her pack.

I'm a Parent

I'm an attached, natural, positive parent. Striving to be a peaceful parent with a harmonious home, full of love and security, with just enough of the appearance of benign neglect that they feel free to explore and be who they are. I feel very strongly that, barring any clear medical need, they were all perfect as given to me, and no changes have been made to their bodies without extremely careful consideration and research. They are unpierced, uncircumsized, and very selectively vaccinated.

They were breastfed on demand, were held as much as we were able while juggling everyone's needs, and co-slept. Moving them into their own beds was NO problem, contrary to the myths. They are secure, happy, and healthy.

Life works so much better when we understand and work with the natural needs and instincts of our children, and our selves.

We Homeschool

Before we had children, we knew homeschooling was what we wanted to do. We were concerned about the sheer numbers of children assaulted and violated at schools across this nation every day, with no adequate protections for them. The official responses seem to cause as many problems as they solve. Zero tolerance policies too often cost good kids their chance at an education, without actually keeping them safe. The numbers of children being passed despite real difficulties, even to the point of being unable to read, and our nation's poor rankings in education compared to other countries was also a concern.

Homeschooling allows such flexibility, to focus on your child's issues and learning style, set aside what doesn't work and take up something else that does, to spend as much time on a concept as it takes, to explore fully every interest. It may not be the answer for every family, but it's undeniable every child would benefit if their teachers had this kind of time and flexibility. We're very happy with the benefits.

I'm a Life-long GamerGirl

Yeah, one of those women they say don't play serious games. Pffft. I started playing on the old Ataris, and my first computer games were on the Apple. I actually worked on writing my own games for the Commodore. Played oldschool Nintendo games, then SNES and Sega. I play D&D, too.

Massively multiplayer online games are one of my favorite types of games. A large part of the reason is the way they are usually inclusive of female gamers, rather than exclusive. The ever-changing worlds don't hurt, either. I've tried out so many MMOs I've lost count, some before they were ever released to the public. Some I loved, some I didn't, and I love to write reviews and guides for them.

Now that I'm a parent of little gamer kids, gaming is a family hobby, and I write about the games they love, too.

My Lifemate's on Squidoo, too

Although he's not as much of a presence here as I am, he's been known to make an appearance in the SquidU forum or write a lens or two.

His avatar is the two of us together in Secondlife, if you click through to take a peek.

Nice lens! In a former life, I played some MTG and one of my favorite table top games was called Earth Dawn. Have you thought about making home school lenses based on individual projects or lessons that you teach? Take care, and thanks for stopping by my 2012 lens.

Thanks! Homeschooling lessons is a niche I've dabbled in; haven't done anywhere near as much with it as I want to yet. In time... :)

I love your lens! I too identify myself with my screename, and have made THREE whole lenses describing myself through my screen name! I used to play an RPG called Magic the Gathering..ever played that. I played online a bit, but did more of it with the cards and stuff.. (Geek Alert!) lol. Loved your bio! I look forward to reading more of your lenses as well!

Been a long time since we've been in touch here or on Gather. Glad to see you are doing well with your lenses. I have a lot of them but not doing too well money wise. Am coming back to check out more of yours.

    Blessings and keep in touch.
