Singing songs rooted in rhythm and movement

Born in Lisbon, Portugal to Cape Verdean Parents, Lura represents a new generation of musical artists carrying on the traditions of Cape Verde. As a former colony of Portugal, Cape Verde's music is a mixture of Portuguese, Brazilian, Caribbean and African influences.

Lura's songs are very emotionally expressive and she favors the rhythmic, dance-based batuku and funana styles. These come from Santiago, where her father was born. It is the most African of the ten islands that make the archipelago nation of Cape Verde. The lyrics she sings are in Creole, a language based on Portuguese and mixed with local African language.

Early in her career she was a backup singer to Cesaria Evora, one of the most celebrated and internationally known singers from Cape Verde. Lura's most recent album is called Eclipse.

Debate: Music in another language

Can you enjoy listening to songs in an unfamiliar language?

Loading

No, I need to understand the words.

Yes, other aspects of the music can reach me through the language barrier.

WhitneyWells says:

I love to hear songs from different languages and cultures.

WhitneyWells says:

I really enjoy the song, not necessarily the lyrics. I love to hear music in other languages.

Rajays says:

Yes I do enjoy songs of many languages that I do not understand. It's the rhythm, sound and other elements that I really enjoy.

cappuccino136 says:

In choirs I have sung in languages I didn't know, like Latin, Spanish, and French. We did have translations available to help us understand an interpret the songs. Still, it made me comfortable with listening to music in a variety of languages. If I hear a song I really like, I do try and find a translation. It is not necessary, though. I can enjoy the melody, rhythm and feeling of the music.
