Visit Shenandoah National Park in Luray Virginia

Hikers and Nature Lovers Enjoy Shenandoah National Park

We enjoy exploring nature, so we loved every minute of our visit to Luray, Virginia and the Shenandoah National Park. This park is home to the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, which run into the Smoky Mountains. (They are actually both a part of the Appalachian Mountain range.)

One thing I really like about this park is that it is partially accessible to people with physical disabilities, too. (Or moms with infants and toddlers in a jogging stroller or wagon!) You can drive along the famous Skyline Drive the whole way through the park and stop off at a few areas along the way to explore a bit. Limberlost Trail was designed specifically to enable people with disabilities to participate in a hike, but the park website says it has not yet been redone to meet current ADA standards. Since we had family members of all ages along on our visit, we spent a lot of time on Limberlost Trail.

Shenandoah National Park is the best!

Are you kidding? Give me the Smoky Mountain National Park!

I say that first I would go to the Smokies...but the Shenandoah is a fantastic park and the Skyline Drive is awesome. I have some fabulous photos from there.

Don't Miss the Luray Zoo

We ran out of time to visit the Luray Zoo, but I wish we would have been able to go. This rescue zoo is home to an alligator snapping turtle who is over 100 years old and an amazing assortment of venomous snakes, as well as a tiger, monkeys and birds of prey.

Luray Caverns

After hiking through Shenandoah National Park for a few days, we headed to the Luray Caverns. They are amazing to go through and the stalacpipe organ was especially fun to see. The boys loved the nearby car and carriage museum and say that was their favorite attraction to visit, but I really don't think you can beat natural wonders!

Need Some Gear for Your Hiking Trip?

You can probably get everything you need at the park or at a store nearby, but it will probably be a bit overpriced. I bought gear on my first hiking trip, came home, priced it at local stores and Amazon and almost cried!
