- Fab lens, thanks. I have been "lurchered" by our very own lurcher, and when I went on the Southern Lurcher link forum, it turns out lots of people have been lurchered so whilst laid up in bed I create a facebook page named "ive been lurchered" - they are beautiful creatures

- i have a 4 year old cross breed, im not to sure of his breeding although i have been told that he could be a mix of collie and lurcher, i got him when my mum rescued a female collie who was pregnant at the time although she was not informed of this anyway i was present at the birthing of my beautiful boy NAKA at first we assumed he was jack russell cross due to his markings he is white with black patch on his eye and ear and smaller black spots elsewhere. The more we looked at him and the bigger he got we realised his paw size meant he was going to be slightly bigger than a jack russell, once he lost his puppy fat he started getting the characteristics of a lurcher but im still not sure, he can run like the wind he loves spinning in circles he enjoys sleeping and loaching lol. If i upload a picture can you please try and help me discover my prince's breed or breeds i should say lol

- What a lovely website about lurchers. I have two rough coat lurchers, a girl Cammy who is a deerhound x, and a boy Crunchy who is a wolfhound x. They are both rescue dogs, and we had them both from pups. They are absolutely brilliant dogs, and are part of the family, hogging our beds and sofas every day lol. Such gentle, loving dogs which I think will be part of our lives for the rest of our lives.

- I'd never heard the term Lurcher until now, but it's been so much fun to read about them. Your dogs sound so sweet. You've got a great amount of info to help people decide whether a Lurcher is right for them. One question though: how do they tend to do with small children?

- Hi BunnyFabulous - like any dog, some Lurchers are absolutely fine with small children and some aren't - it depends on the dog and the child in question! Lurchers tend be so laid back they're almost horizontal, but bear in mind that dogs from rescue centres often have a "history" of neglect and abuse so they do need considerate handling and respect which often young children don't understand as they may see a dog or any other furry pet as just another toy...

- I am Pupski's person here on the Canadian west coast.... We set up a site www.lurcher.ca because so many folks here had never heard about lurchers.
people stopped me in the street to ask about her breed.... She is one of the creatures that every pet person dreams of... she is intelligent & wishes to please us , she seldom barks, learns new things quickly, & adapts to any situation with a grace which makes her very easy to live with
She has never shown any interest in using any of the furniture but does like to be in same room as us, she will curl up beside the desk & nap for hours with out complaint even in unfamiliar places.
She loves to go for runs in the woods or on the beach., She takes her "guard dog" duty seriously when left at home, in the car, or even in an hotel without disturbing anything or making a noise... I wouldn't like to be the person who tried to enter without authorization though....
She has won over many people who thought they didn't like or were afraid of dogs with her personality & unusual appearance.
To know a lurcher is love one.
Hope you will visit PUPSKI at www.lurcher.ca

- We don't "have" lurchers in North America as far as that specific name for them, though of course there are crosses between sighthounds and other breeds, so, technically, we got 'em. And ohhh, those lovely little faces! Your loverly lurchers seem like dogs who'd get along just fine with my greyhounds, too. :)

She's got the "canine dustbin" eating habits of a lab and looks like a stocky little dumpy black pudding in comparison to Tigger and Amber who are sleek and skinny! Love her to bits though, she's a real comedian and the sweetest dog ever :) Hope you get the new Lurcher puppy - Lurchers are addictive!

Sooner shes home the sooner the spoiling can begin. Put the cage up in living room yesterday so think the other two realise that the little bundle they met the other day is heading our way.
Tried phoning kennels but just getting answer machine at the moment, may be as its tea time, will try later / in the morning.

Getting on well all three of them, I went upstairs for about 3 mins before and she fussed like I'd been away for a fortight.
She still has a bit of a limp (Rspca vet says theres nothing wrong) getting her checked by our vet tomorrow night. She's ok walking on it but tends to lift it when standing.

I am going to show this site to my husband as the only gripe we have is he jumps on our sofas to sleep when we are not about! When we are about he is happy to lay on his bed....I'm hoping when the radiators are on he will prefer their warmth to the cold of the leather!

- I adopted a 2 year old lurcher last week from a rescue centre and it was the best decision I ever made. I was distraught after losing my jack russell cross for some time and decided it was time to look for my new best friend. Indy is beautiful, playful, cuddly, clever and gentle. It hurts me to think he spent months in a kennel with this gorgeous nature and willingness to be with people. Thanks for the useful information

- A wonderful story of the rescue, and adoption of your Lurcher Dogs! They are precious, and your love of them shines through. I was aware of horrific condtions, and Greyhound rescue, but did not know about Luchers. Splendid info for people thinking about adopting this dog. Delightful photos of cared for dogs, and heartbreaking views of the conditions endured by many of these animals. I watched the Halifax Rescue through my tears.

- Lurchers are often mistreated. They are traditional dogs of the UK and Irish "traveller" community and many are used for (illegal) hunting. They are generally regarded as working dogs, not pets and are kept in conditions that leave a lot to be desired and when they are of no further use they are often abandoned (if they are lucky) - or worse . I've seen pictures of malnourished dogs, with horrific skin conditions, worm infestations and serious injuries caused by working or human mistreatment. The fortunate few are found and nursed back to health and a better future by rescue organisations...but the tide of unwanted dogs never ceases to flow :(

- I am Pupski's person from www.lurcher.ca .I set up the site because here on the Canadian west coast people just didn't know about LURCHERS...
PUPSKI may be a bit of a rebel in some aspects... she has never shown the least bit of interest in any piece of funiture ... she was even reluctant to sit on the seat in the car till we put her bed down to let her know that it is "her space".
In most other aspects she is is every bit the normal, easy to live with dog that people dream of having.... She loves to go for runs or to curl up beside the desk & sleep .. She will do either for hours at a time..
She wants to be with us. however she is ready be on guard if we leave her alone in the house, car or even at an hotel without making any fuss or damage... She has won over many hotel maids who thought they did not like dogs.
I can only hope that in the future we will be able to find more dogs like her.....

- I hav a retired racing greyhound and a mad mad lurcher. They are great fun together and even though Brandi (the greyhound) is 9 she stll loves to chase and be chased my Smudge It (the lurcher). They are both on a fun dog display team, which they thoroughly enjoy, and Smudge It has just joined a competition agility class - no competing will take place, but its wonderful to see her haring (pardon the pun) around the course at 40mph jumping and running thru tunnels. She is deerhound/beardi collie mix so is funny and bouncy most of the time - .They love their beds - memory foam - but will always choose the old sofa first - so I have to be quick if I want a speck. I can't imagine my life without them - Brandi is a Pets As Therapy dog and Smudge It is being assesed to work with e for The Blue Cross during my educational speaking. Great ambassador dogs - best in the world in my opinion and all those we visit.

I'd suggest ringing round a few animal shelters and asking whether they have any Lurchers (you might have to describe them as sighthound or greyhound etc crosses as I'm not sure if the term "Lurcher" is known all that well outside of the UK and Ireland. Although I don't have a lurcher in the official sense, I do have a terrier and in many ways you could have been describing her. I can never let her off her leash!

- Your Lurchers are beautiful. I loved all your pictures and have never heard of a Lurcher. My son has 2 greyhounds and these remind me of them. I am in the US and don't know what a "faddy eater" is? You certainly bring up good points concerning their behavior for the would-be owner. Personally I love to see pets curled up on the furniture.

- Ebony is a piglet...if I let her she'd eat until she exploded...definitely more Lab than sighthound in her case! The other 2 are all skinny and elegant and she's a porky little black pudding in comparison - it's only her tendancy to bounce on the spot like Zebedee from the Magic Roundabout that keeps her weight under control...mad as a box of frogs - but I love her :D

- Thankfully Blade gets his food burned off doing his 40mph around the park! lol!
Thanks for the feature, you are now featured also.
BTW, I apologise if this is in there - I looked and couldn't see it - but lurchers came around because the Rich/Royal/Elite banned lower classes from having pedigree/proper breed hunting dogs (grey hounds, whippets, etc) so they bred them with other dogs so they could do it without getting any jip off the higher classes.

Every morning they would let her out, she would sail over our fence, do what she had to do on our lawn and leap back over the fence. LOL! Incidentally, that same friend's 32 year old pony is called Amber.

- I had a lurcher called Amber - it was a strange name for a boy but he was a rescue dog. He had the most gentle nature and despite being a former hunting dog he would tolerate my Persian cat curling up between his legs. I can recommend rehoming a lurcher or greyhound to anyone. Amber was at least 19 and possibly 21 years old when he died despite a very rough start in life with some ignorant poachers. Squid Angel blessing today :).

That's funny because his name is Hook because his tail is bent on the end! He was the last of a very large litter. (11) He is a great dog and quite a conversation starter when we are out and about.

Its great to know there are other people who love lurchers, I have had some strange experiences on walks where people seem to think they are scary dogs, my lurcher is the gentlest most placid dog you could meet and has been no trouble whatsover despite being a rescue dog who did not have an easy life early on. All my friends think he is great and I have many standby homes on offer if we dont want him - 'as if !!' i wouldnt be without him now and would really miss my shadow ,how can anyone not take to this breed who give so much and are so trusting

Just today I've discovered the term "lurcher" and found your page here with more info & photos. I don't know if she was intentionally bred as a lurcher (we adopted her from a rescue at 6mos old), it seems like she could be considered a lurcher. Anyway, thanks for the helpful info! :)

- I really love this lens! I have a two year old rescue lucher who is adorable, cute and loving. He is about 23" at the shoulder but is still bossed about by my other dog who is a Cairn terrier cross and is about 7" at the shoulder. It's so funny to watch them run around together until she gets mad that she can't catch him. I have never regretted getting him and would definately have another lurcher.
I have a Zazzle store called Mrs Cookies Dog Shop which has a section dedicated to Lurchers. The link has been added above and is also in my profile if anyone is interested.

- Thanks for all the info, we've had our rescue dog for nearly 6 years now & were never sure what she was until we read all the traits, apart from being a bit nervous she is the most loving dog we've owned, unfortunately we suspect she was badly treated in her first few months then dumped, luckily we've given her the best life we can & she loves us for it, she can outrun most dogs in the park & can walk all day across the hills, then on other days she can sleep for Britain curled up with our old cat. We would quite happily take on another one to keep ours company.

- @ Anna - I warn you - Lurchers can be addictive! I adopted one, then another one, then another one and I'd have several more if my house was bigger!
Lurchers are prone to bumps, bruises and cuts as they love to run and don't always look where they're going - plus they have very little body fat, so their skin can tear quite easily. They also get strained muscles and injured joints because they give it so much welly when running!
Other than that, they're pretty hardy :)
They (especially the short coated ones) feel the cold due to the lack of body fat, so you might need to get a winter coat.
Really pleased to hear that your dog has had found their "Forever Sofa :)

- Thanks for all the info here. Owned dogs all my life, German Shepherds, Labs, Spaniels but just got the Lurcher from the dog pound last week. We picked him up off the road and handed him over to the animal warden the next day, assuming someone would claim him. He was soooooo lovely my family (kids and and husband) nagged every day to see if he had been claimed.. Well he is ours now, soooo sleepy compared to springer spaniel we have, has a built in paper shredding device! And likes to move shoes around the house. Met the cat! cat wapped him a couple of times but he didn't eat the cat therefore he can stay! I had wondered about muzzling as we have loads of wild rabbits - so now I think I will -
Do they have any medical things that I should be aware of (apart from smothering themselves with a pillow on the sofa) ? The RSPCA lady didn't know
Thanks

- Hey,
since 3 days I have my little Lurcher pup Bodie ( 8 weeks ) and I was laughing when I read all these interesting things about Lurchers. Long story, since we've actually wanted a GS but when we learned about Lurchers we were very interested. And then we saw Bodie in that dark cellar room, all wet and smelly and no one cared... we just took him home with us. And what can we say, this bundle full of love for us (since the first second) is so adorable, we will definately have another Lurcher!!!
Yeah, mine is 100% Lurcher, a real couch potato and ever so sleepy. Probably not only because he is a puppy! Phantastic site I will visit regulary (just a bit tired now, babys can be sooooo demanding!!! Especially if they want to sleep in your bed!!
Have a look at Bodie, if you want to. Just look for Maggie Vo on facebook!
Kind Regards!

- Found my deerhound/greyhound lurcher in rescue kennels back in 1985. Knew nothing about them, but he was everything thats said about them - soft, comfort-loving, patient with kiddies and loyal. Everything except hunting - he would chase and corner a bunny, then just dance about in front of it "come on, lets play"!!! He was nearly 3 when I got him and had him for 11 years. Was still as lively and daft as a puppy until his last year when some ****** let their vicious bull mastiff out one night and it took me and the wife chains, staves and chair legs to get him off my old boy. Blood everywhere! Old boy managed to recover, but repidly became senile until everything he ate came straight out back and he grew stick-thin! I still get wet-eyed about taking him to the vet the last time.
Now I've got a whippet cross retriever whos coming up to 11, but I still miss my old Laddie lurcher.

- Great lens, with great information! I actually had never heard of a Lurcher before you left your comment on my page (thanks so much!); I wonder how prevelant they are in the US? They do sound addictive, and also appear to have a lot in common with Boxers, regarding the furniture and lower level of activity after exercise (at least all the Boxers we've owned). People think they are so high energy, and they do have their moments, but are also very laid back. Thanks for the Lurcher education; will also visit your site at CafePress! 5 stars to you - keep rescuing!

- I used to have two lurchers, quite a few years ago now. They were great with the children, would defend you and your property against anything ... and I really do mean anything. They're soft as anything with their own family and our'family included two cats, which you would actually have thought were the lurchers' pets rather than ours, one of them loved fruit (peaches - honestly, she did).
Where we were a number of pet rabbits had escaped and bred with the wild ones so occasionally you would get a really strange coloured rabbit, I think perhaps because of the cats, the two lurchers weren't very sure whether thwy were allowed LOL
They are fabulous dogs and it's just fantastic when you can find an area of moorland where you can just let them do what comes naturally. It's a joy to watch them.
Excellent lens.

- Hi George - I'm so sorry to hear about your loss and I understand completely how you (and your Mum) feel.
When my beloved Sam died, I was devastated. I didn't want another dog, all I wanted was him. Then fate brought Tigger into my life, followed by Amber and Ebony. All 3 are rescue Lurchers and they have helped to heal the big Sam-shaped hole in my life.
Sam was such a happy, wonderful, loving, PERFECT dog, I'm totally sure that once the life he and I shared was over, he would have wanted me to help other dogs in need and not waste my love grieving for him.
Bess and Sam are running free at the Rainbow Bridge where there is no pain and no suffering and where they will be forever young.
Tigger, Amber and Ebony haven't replaced Sam, no dog could replace him...but they have healed the raw pain of my broken heart & I adore them.
Give your Mum time to come to terms with the loss of Bess...she may feel differently once the pain has dulled...

We called her Bess, her favourite place in the day was the sofa and at night it was my bed. Im now 19 and we had to put Bess to sleep 4 weeks ago because her back leg went and she kept falling down and it has devestated my family my mum has shorn she will never get another pet but after reading about how many lurchers are destroyed because they cannot get rehomed im tempted to ask her about the possibility of getting another lurcher. - I am the proud owner of four Lurchers and a Greyhound, its hard going but I wouldent be without.
I ended up with my first Lurcher nearly two years ago by accident I found him as a stray thought he was a Greyhound kwew nothing about the breed but my Lord what a learning we have had, we let him off the lead after a couple of weeks gone in a second he would turn up at some point hours or seconds ? We have learned through advise from other people he is Saluki cross well if you know Lurchers you know the dilema. He has got me in to total mess Police caution etc, The postie left the gate open he went on a free for all and found a Allpaca farm localy I dident know excisted he took two of my other Lurchers they deserted him when it got dirty one came home deerhound cross the other Bull/Greyhound the postie picked him up and was driving around with him in the post van, Icould honesly writte a book the ups and downs,
he got out chased a deer caught it but it was on a animal sancturary.

- We rescued a Lurcher, a bitch called Gypsey. She had been neglected and is 4 years old.
Out of all the other dogs at the kennels she was the one who didn't bark! and we fell for her so easily. We have 3 energetic children, and Gyp has fitted into family life without any trouble at all. The worst we have had is a chewed frizbee!!She loves us all unconditionally and is never more than 3 feet away from me when I am pottering about the place.
I can honestly say hand on heart she is the best dog I have ever met, and I am considering a companion for her, because I have been well and truely 'bitten' by the Lurcher bug!
Watch this space!!!!

- Thanks to you all. I'm from Canada and I didn't know I had a Lurcher until I found this site. We picked her up at a pet rescue center several years ago and I knew I had a wonderful, affectionate, loving, "40mph" couch potato but had no clue what kind of dog she was. Now I know what to say when people compliment my Lurcher and ask what kind of dog she is.
One question: she has developed the unfortunate habit of nipping at people's heels (a legacy of her herding dog side I suppose) does anyone know how to discourage this behaviour?
