What is a Lychee?

A lychee is a rare sub tropical fruit originating in South China is known in their culture as "the King of Fruits"

The lychee tree originated about 2000 years ago in the tropical rainforests of Southern China. Wow, that's old!!!

The Chinese consider the lychee, which is a red, heart-shaped fruit, a symbol of romance and love.

A cup of fresh lychee fruit has only 125 calories and is rich with vitamin C and potassium.

Although lychees are native to China, they can also be grown in Florida and Hawaii.

Lychees in a Can

You'll probably almost never see fresh lychees unless you go to an Asian market when they are in season, typically during the summer months. Lychees from a can actually taste delicious easten as is. You can also use it for a variety of desserts. Spoon it over ice cream or sherbet or incorporate it with gelatin desserts or puddings. The lychee juice is sweet and refreshing, especially on the rocks!

Canned lychees can be found at most Asian grocery stores, and they are very cheap at about $1.50 or less per can.

Lychees and Almond Jelly Dessert

This is a refreshing dessert that will surely be a hit at any dinner party or potluck. When I was growing up, my mom used to make this all the time especially during family get-togethers (which was ALL the time:)

All you need is a can of lychees and a packet of Chinese almond jelly, found at most Asian supermarkets.

Follow the directions on the packet (just like making regular Jello).

As soon as the jelly is congealed (after a few hours or overnight) cut in to small squares and place in a large bowl. Add a can of lychees, including juice, and add some ice cubes if desired. This should always be served cold.

Lychee Martini

You got to try this martini - it's out-of-this-world!

If you ask me, this is the best way to enjoy a lychee. What could be better than an ice cold martini with luscious exotic lychees in it? It's extremely simple to make and you will definitely want more than one drink. Danger! Danger! This drink is very addicting. Better to make this at home as it costs $12-15 at a bar, if they even have it!

What You Will Need

Ice cubes
3 ounces vodka
1/2 ounce lychee syrup*
splash of vermouth
2 lychees, for garnish

*available at most Asian markets

What To Do Next

Fill a cocktail shaker ice. Add vodka, lychee juice and vermouth. Shake until chilled. Pour into 2 martini glasses and garnish with lychees. Cheers!
