Book Review: Lying On Sunday

Ranked #271,330 overall

My Review

This is Christian fiction at its best! One of the main complaints I have with most Christian fiction books is that the characters are way too perfect and saccharine (think Karen Kingsbury) or else they're trying to proselytize everyone (think Gilbert Morris).

Abbie Torrington is a seeker. She knows something about the Christian faith, but she isn't really clear on the finer points of what she believes because she's been living in the shadow of her husband Trey for 20 years. She thought she had the perfect life: loving husband, two beautiful, intelligent daughters, and everything money could buy. Then she discovered that the life she had been living was a lie, at least the part of it that contained her husband. Not only does Abbie find out her husband is dead, but she discovers he died in another woman's bed, and she was served with divorce papers the day of his death. Suddenly, she's not sure what to believe.

This novel (Souza's second) is the story of Abbie's transformation from meek doormat housewife to strong, opinionated widow, complete with a sexy college English professor.

The characters are "real people" with real problems and real flaws. I love it!

This is such a great book. I had so much trouble putting it down each night to go to bed. This is the way all Christian fiction should be written!

Sorry, not my cup of tea.

As a Christian I can't believe that a woman would lose her Faith just because of a husband (or any human) There is nothing or no one that could ever take my Faith from me. I'm not judging her, but I guess I would not read the book because of that...my little quirk, but true.

How did Abbie Torrington cope with her husband's betrayal and death?

"I dumped his underwear drawer. ... And I tossed him out of my bedroom. And I bought a red car." And I survived.

One of the things I loved about the book:

Abbie's friendship with Shawlie

Abbie's relationship with Shawlie reminded me so much of the relationship between Claire Spencer (Michelle Pfeiffer) and her best friend Jody (Diana Scarwid) in What Lies Beneath - one of my favorite movies of all time!
What Lies Beneath - Movie Review
What Lies Beneath (2000) is a fabulous mystery/thriller starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Harrison Ford. The DVD is available on Amazon.
