Surge of Denim
Said to be a derivation of the French material "serg de nimes", denim has now trveled well beyond its mother shores, reinventing and renovating itself along the way.
As american Fabrics magazines put its. "Denim has climbed tha lader of taste." What was once a heavy duty workrwear is now every famous designer's favorite canvass and every fashion multi-purpose must have. And who can blame them? Everybody loves denim and the constant flux of new cuts, designs and uses proves that denim fits our ever changing tastes and trends.
Dos and Don'ts: The denim edition
A quick how-to on wearing America's favorite fabric
Don'ts:
1. Don't make a mini even mini-er by pairing with heels. (If you do opt for the short styles, pair them with flats to counterbalance the hem.)

2. Don't let your denim dress you down: Had this girl traded her ratty skirt and fuchsia leggings for a crisp pair of cropped jeans, she'd be rocking a chic stripes-and-jeans combo.

3. Don't ignore one simple rule every woman should know (and this means you!): When wearing denim that is white, avoid anything too tight.

4. Don't forget that, despite popular opinion, denim does not go with everything. Example number one is this woman's confusing decision to pair a bias-cut Western skirt with a pink lace top.

5. Don't cover yourself head-to-toe with shredded holes. (What's OK? One--maybe two, tops--little funky tears on your favorite pairs of jeans.)

6. Don't go for denim dresses with tie-dyed washes or loud details. Stick to a clean-cut silhouette that will always be chic.

Dos:
1. Do try a fitted denim pencil skirt. It's just as sexy as a miniskirt but in a polished, uptown kind of way.

2. Do find a style of jeans that works for you and stick with it--regardless of what's "in". Any pair of jeans can be easily updated with one or two trendy pieces, be it a cool army jacket or a bright bag.

3. Do pull off white jeans (before and after Memorial Day, thank you very much) by pairing 'em with a darker color on top. Add a colorful accessory to make your whole outfit pop.

4. Do try a classic A-line skirt in denim: The nipped-waist and just-below-the-knee hemline will flatter most figures, while the basic blue wash will go with just about every top you own.

5. Do aim for that easy, all-American look: crisp white tee and standard blue jeans.

5. Do add a fitted blazer to any ol' pair of jeans for an instantly pulled-together look.
Skinny Jeans
the new denim must have
It's all skinny. It should be skinny enough to wear or at least gutsy enough to wear skinny jeans. It is accentuate long, lean leans and deviate attention from the tush.Ranger, Cisco Kid, Zorro and Gene Autry, Marilyn Monroe, and Sandra Dee wearing their pants very slim to the ankle. Today even financial all-stars such as Kent Sowell wear them.
Skinny jeans became most notable with country music stars and with the birth of rock 'n' roll in the '50s, when Elvis donned slim-fitting jeans and shocked the country with his gyrating dance moves. Skinny jeans and rock 'n' roll were inextricably linked to create the "bad boy" image that remains today. Skinny jeans were also worn by numerous rock bands, including the The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and others.
Drainpipe jeans (as they were then called) were also extremely popular in the punk movement of the late 1970s, worn by many bands and scene leaders such as The Clash, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols and were sold by the revolutionary shop Sex, run by Vivienne Westwood. The tight fit trousers were often customised with bondage-style zips or patches of other material, and were often worn tucked into industrial-style boots such as Dr Martens.
They are fairly popular among skaters, BMX riders and inline skaters.
Skinny jeans were also very popular in the 1980s, with most heavy metal bands in particular those in the thrash scene such as Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica and Slayer. This was the trend for those who didn't wear spandex, which was popular with the dominant glam metal scene at the time. They were often worn with white high-top sneakers or basket-ball shoes. By the late '80s and early '90s, many hard rock bands such as Poison, Guns N' Roses and Mötley Crüe to Kiss, Bon Jovi and Slaughter, ditched the spandex and wore the form fitted jeans. However with the rise of grunge and hip-hop music in the early nineties and the post thrash movement, skinny jeans quickly went out of favour.
In the early 2000s, they became favored by garage rock revival bands and musicians, such as The Strokes. Model Kate Moss has been credited with reintroducing the jeans to women. Among women, skinny jeans are most often worn tucked into boots or scrunched up over the wearer's footwear.[1] Skinny jeans are also often paired with ballerina shoes, another trend that supermodel Kate Moss has been credited with. The Libertines (particularly Carl Barat and Pete Doherty) used skinny jeans as part of their image. This was later adopted by more mainstream indie pop and indie rock acts such as Test Icicles, Kaiser Chiefs, Kasabian, The Kooks and The Horrors, as well as comedians Russell Brand and Noel Fielding, increasing the popularity of skinny jeans amongst men. Some skateboarders prefer to wear the jeans because of their ability to stretch, thus making it easier to move around whilst skating. Skinny jeans are also now very prominent in the Bmx scene rendering greater maneuverability and less instances in which the pants are caught in the bikes moving parts.
Perfect Denim For You
Tips for a Flattering Fit
Here are some tips for a flattering fit.
1. Color - Select the right color. The darker the denim, the thinner you will look. You'll look curvier
and larger in lighter washes.
2. Look for a waist that buttons or snaps comfortably.
3. If you select low-rise denim, make sure they don't create a tummy bad effect over the top.
4. Make sure denim are long enough to wear with the kinds of shoes you planned to go with them, including boots or heels.
5. Select a style that is slimming to your leg. They shouldn't be too tight fitting. Flares and boot cuts are good because they elongate the leg.
6. If you have a fuller bottom - Avoid skin-tight styles with any extra embellishment or distressed look on the back. Look for pockets that are simply, proportionally sized and spaced.
7. Styles with a slight flare or ankle embellishment will balance out your curvy figure. Well fitted low-rise denim can also flatter your bottom.
8. For curvy bodies, try a boot cut, five-pocket styles or denim with slash pockets on the diagonal. Look for stretch denim for some give. If you're full figured, try a 5 pocket denim in a dark color. Choose
9. If you're slim, try the extra low-rise styles to show off your flat tummy and slim hips. If you have slim/athletic, try a low rise and a bootcut.
10. If you're short, slim-fit styles with a slight flare make your legs look longer. Avoid cuffs.
11. Check the price. Good denim normally come at a price, but consider how much you are willing to spend.
12. Remember, all denim are not created equal. There are very casual denim and dressier pairs. Make sure you have some of both in your closet. Casual denim may be more faded or distressed. Darker, well-cut denim are better for nicer occasions.
Taking care of Denim
To help reduce fading, turn the denim inside out and wash in warm water possible. Cold water will reduce the shrinkage and fading. Hang, rather than fold your denim, because a white line will eventually appear in the crease area. Avoid rubbing stains as this can pull the color.
But for dress jeans or to extend the life of your denim, drycleaning is your best option. It helps keep them soft and they do not shrink or become thin as quickly. Drycleaning will also preserve the color, fit and look of new jeans longer than washing.
