Why the Lyrebird is so cool
My favorite bird is the lyrebird. Why? Because it is the most incredible bird ever! It is the only bird that imitates other birds. Yes, that's right. It imitates their songs. And not only this, it imitates everything else it deems sonically interesting. The Lyrebird's day starts with making a stage. A place on the forest floor is cleared of every twig and leaf. The show begins when the lyrebird enters the stage, moves to the center and starts singing. It is imitating all other birds around him. And not just this. In his documentary, Sir David Attenborough caught one lyrebird imitating the clicking sound of a foto camera's shutter as well as the sound of a chainsaw.
The lyrebird lives in Australia and reach a height between 70 and 90 cm. There are two kinds of lyrebird, the superb lyrebird, also called weringerong, and the Albert's lyrebird. The picture below shows a male superb lyrebird. Lyrebirds live on the ground and feed on insects, spiders, and worms.
