Elton John - A Brief Biography

Sir Elton John was born in Pinner, Middlesex in England on 25th March 1947. His real name is Reginald Kenneth Dwight, he changed it to "Elton John" in the mid 60's, in homage to Bluesology saxophonist Elton Dean and Long John Baldry.

He was a musical prodigy and started playing the piano at the age of 3. At the age of 11, he won a junior scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music and for the next five years, he travelled into central London to attend Saturday classes at the Academy, in addition to attending Pinner County Grammar School.

At 15 he had become a weekend pianist at a local pub, playing the old sing-a-long songs that used to be popular in pubs in those days, everything from Jim Reeves to the old wartime songs.

Elton played as a backing musician for a number of bands in the late 1960's, and together with Bernie Taupin he began his songwriting career.

His first album, "Elton John" was released in the Spring of 1970, but the first single "Border Song" barely made in into the US Top 100. THe second single from that album, Your Song made it into the Top 10, and from that point Elton was on his way to super-stardom.

His subsequent great hits, including Rocket Man, Levon and Honky Cat all did well in the charts, but his most famous album has to be Goodbye Yellow Brick Road which includes the hits of the same name as well as Funeral For A Friend and the most famous of all Candle In The Wind written in tribute to Marilyn Monroe.
