Descripton of the Action of the M1911

The M1911 is a recoil-operated, self-loading hand magazine-fed,weapon. It contains an inertia-type firing pin that makes it impossible for the firing pin to discharge or touch the primer, except on receiving the impact of the hammer of the recoil spring forces. After shot is fired, the action retracts rearward upon a spring which drives the slide forward, feeding a live cartridge from the magazine into the chamber. The weapon is now ready to fire again.
b. The pistol is designed to fire caliber .45 cartridge ball ammunition and the magazine holds seven cartridges. The upper cartridge is stripped from the magazine and forced into the chamber by the forward motion of the slide. The pistol will fire once at each squeeze of the trig ger and when the last cartridge, in the magazine, has been fired the slide remains
open. The rate of fire is limited only by the ability of the operator to insert the magazine and to squeeze the trigger.

John Browning the inventor of the M1911

John Moses Browning (January 21Encyclopedia Britannica online, "John Moses Browning". or January 23, 1855 ? November 26, 1926), born in Ogden, Utah, was an American firearms designer who developed many varieties of firearms, cartridges, and gun mechanisms, many of which are still in use around the world. He is the most important figure in the development of modern automatic and semi-automatic firearms and is credited with 128 gun patents?his first was granted October 7, 1879. He had made his first very own firearm at the age of thirteen out of a piece of scrap metal.

Browning influenced nearly all categories of firearms design. He invented or made significant improvements to single-shot rifles, lever action rifles, and slide action firearms. His most significant contributions were in the area of autoloading firearms. He developed the autoloading pistol by inventing the slide design found on nearly every modern automatic handgun. He also developed the first gas-operated machine gun, the Colt-Browning Model 1895?a system that would surpass recoil operation in popularity. Other successful designs include the M1911 pistol, the Browning .50 caliber machine gun, the Browning Automatic Rifle, and a ground-breaking semi-automatic shotgun, the Browning Auto-5.

M1911 on Wikipedia

The M1911 is a single-action, semi-automatic, magazine-fed, recoil-operated handgun chambered for the .45 ACP cartridge. It was designed by John M. Browning, and was the standard-issue side arm for the United States armed forces from 1911 to 1985, and is still carried by some U.S. forces. It was widely used in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Its formal designation as of 1940 was Automatic Pistol, Caliber .45, M1911 for the original Model of 1911 or Automatic Pistol, Caliber .45, M1911A1 for the M1911A1, adopted in 1924. The designation changed to Pistol, Caliber .45, Automatic, M1911A1 in the Vietnam era. In total, the United States procured around 2.7 million M1911 and M1911A1 pistols during its service life.

The M1911 is the most well-known of John Browning's designs to use the short recoil principle in its basic design. Besides the pistol being widely copied itself, this operating system rose to become the pre-eminent type of the 20th century and of nearly all modern centerfire pistols. It is popular with civilian shooters in competitive events such as IDPA and the International Practical Shooting Confederation shooting.
