Mac Twitter Apps

Desktop Twitter applications for your Mac

The next section contains short reviews of some of the applications you can use with your Mac to connect to Twitter. I'm including some basic information, such as Developer, price and website, plus my opinion of each application in terms of its strengths and weaknesses.

Socialite

Developer: RealMac Software

Website: www.realmacsoftware.com/socialite

Socialite started a couple of years ago as Event Box and it was recently acquired by RealMac Software, the developers of RapidWeaver web design software. RealMac has an excellent reputation and they now have three main products: RapidWeaver, Little Snapper and Socialite.

To start using Socialite, you'll have to grant the application access to your Twitter account. However, you can easily deauthorize the application in your Twitter settings if you decide to not continue using Socialite.

Socialite has a Mac-like interface that is familiar and comfortable for most Mac users. Once you've authorized Socialite, the application's window will display the most recent tweets that your Twitter account has received. You can also view messages you've received from other Twitter users.

Posting a new message to Twitter with Socialite is very easy. Just type your tweet at the bottom of the window and click the Send button. If you want to search for other people's tweets on a particular topic, you only need to click the Search button at the top of the window, enter your search term and click the OK button. Your searches will be added to Socialite's sidebar so that you can return to the searches at a later time.

If you're looking for an easy-to-use, yet comprehensive Twitter application to use with your Mac, give Socialite a try. It costs only $20, but you can try out the demo for free.

Twitterific

Developer: The IconFactory

Website: iconfactory.com/software/twitterrific

Twitterific is a product of The IconFactory, another very reputable Mac company. Twitterific has been around for almost three years, so it has been well-tested. It is not, however, nearly as comprehensive an application as Socialite and it does not have a particularly Mac-friendly interface. I find the white text on a dark gray background difficult to read.

The Twitterific window can be hidden while you're working in another application and it will reappear whenever there are new tweets from the people you are following. Twitterific sits in your menu bar, so you can easily access its window from any application at any time.

With Twitterific, you can read new tweets, reply to them or send direct messages to the tweeters. Sending a new tweet is easy - just type your tweet in the text box at the bottom of the Twitterific window and press the Return key.

If you want a simple, non-intrusive Twitter application that can be easily accessed from within other applications, try Twitterific. It sells for $14.95 from The IconFactory.

Tweetie

Developer: atebits

Website: www.atebits.com/tweetie-mac/index.html

Tweetie, developed by atebits, has two versions - a free version that includes ads and a paid, ad-free version. I tried the free version, but I didn't see any ads. However, I did see a nice, Mac-like, attractive interface. Tweetie is similar to Socialite both in appearance and functionality.

With Tweetie, you can view tweets from the people you are following and direct messages you have received from other tweeters. Like Socialite, Tweetie also lets you search for tweets on any topic. Just click the magnifying glass in the sidebar, type a term in the search box on the top of the window and press the Return key to see results in the Tweetie window. Unlike Socialite, however, Tweetie only saves one search.

Posting to Twitter with Tweetie provides you with some additional options. Click the small pad and pencil in the lower left corner of the Tweetie window and a text box opens with a drop-down menu that gives you three options: Shorten URLS, Add Image and Record Video. I particularly like the option to shorten a URL directly from the Tweetie application.

The paid version of Tweetie costs $19.95, but try the free version first. If you can find where the ads are hidden in the free version, let me know.
