About Macaroni and Peas

who we are and what we do

Why Macaroni and Peas?

Hopefully, the name makes you think of macaroni and cheese, a classic comfort food and perennial favorite of kids the world over. Kids are held in high esteem here at Macaroni and Peas, so it felt natural to name our business after a food kids love. We changed the cheese to peas to remind you that any food can be healthy, even the creamy, cheesy goodness that is macaroni and cheese.

What do you do?

All parents want their children to grow up healthy and happy. Keeping up with nutritional findings, preparing healthy foods for your family, and getting your kids to eat them can be a full time job in and of itself. We teach parents to simplify the process of buying, preparing, and eating food with their family's health and tastes in mind.

We know that kids can be picky eaters. We know that more and more kids are overweight these days. We know that you don't have time to prepare a six course meal from scratch. We're here to help you work through those obstacles.

Why do you do it?

I am a mom too. I work full time as does my husband. We don't have time to prepare delicious home cooked masterpieces like our mothers did. But, like you, we want our kid to grow up healthy and happy.

After our son was born, I poured over nutrition books and immersed myself in nutritional websites. I devoured magazines about fitness, nutrition, parenting, cooking. I read about kids nutritional requirements, tastes, habits, and patterns. I took classes on nutrition and food science. I was overwhelmed by the amount of information available.

It shouldn't be this difficult. What was I missing? I wracked my brain. Then one day, it hit me during a simple exchange with my son.

"Do you want a slice of pie?" I asked.

"No, can I have an apple instead?"

Did he just say what I think he said? I had an epiphany. Kids do like sweets and junk food, but they also like good food. Given the chance, I honestly think most kids can choose the right amount of the right foods. No, I'm not saying you should let your kids eat whatever they want, but I am saying you should trust their instincts as much as you trust your own.

I tested a ton of different things on the family. Some things were hits (macaroni and peas, for example) and others were not. I realized that I could make real food that satisfied my hungry husband and growing son and I could do it very quickly. I'm a big fan of the 20 minute dinner and the 5 minute breakfast and lunch.

In talking to other parents, I found that many of them struggled with what to feed their growing families. Many parents said they didn't have time to cook or know how to cook. I want to share what I've learned with other parents. There is no reason feeding your family should complicated or time consuming.

What do you do?

I offer one on one, personalized consultations to help you find ways to feed your family healthy food in less time. Whether your family is struggling to deal with food allergies or picky eaters, I can help.

What happens in the first session?

First, I need to learn all about you and your family. What are your daily lives like? Is anyone a picky eater, allergy sufferer, vegetarian, etc.? The more I know about your family's lifestyle and habits, the easier it is for me to offer personalized advice.

From there, I'll make specific, personalized recommendations around shopping, cooking, and serving food. We'll talk about how to talk to your kids about healthy eating and realistic ways to incorporate healthy eating into your current lifestyle. I'll demystify some of the common myths about healthy eating and show you a few shortcuts that may save you time and money.

We'll work together and decide on one or two things to start on between sessions. Making changes like this in baby steps helps the changes stick and lowers resistance to the change.

What happens in the other sessions?

During subsequent sessions, we'll chat about how things are going. We'll address any specific concerns you have about the things you've tried (or anything else). Lastly, we'll use these sessions to fine tune our strategy to help it fit seamlessly with your schedule, budget, and lifestyle.

How much do you charge?

I voted less than 15, which makes them both 50%. I like the service you offer. My son is 12, nonverbal and on the autism spectrum. He has had feeding therapy since 2002 and we are back almost where we started. The therapist is an OT who specializes in sensory disorders. Anyway he is basically drinking large amounts of soy milk and rice drink. Do you have any experience with autistic kids?
