Basic Facts about Macaw Parrots

Did you know that the largest variety is more than 3 feet in size that is measured from head to tail and that the Green Wing Macaw is only ranked second measuring 36 inches only? The smallest variety on the other hand is only 12 inches in length.

These birds can live for 25 years to 80 years or even more especially when taken cared of properly. They are great companions for a lifetime indeed.

They are natives of different places according to what variety they are. The Scarlet Macaw for example originates from the American tropics, tropical Mexico, Peru, Brazil and Bolivia. Other varieties can be found in South America, Colombia, Panama, Amazon Basin and Ecuador.

They have different colors as well. Their colors range from green to blue, red to orange and yellow. Some also have gold coloration in the body. The Blue Gold Macaw is the perfect example of this. It has green forehead with blue wings and tail. It also has dark blue chin. Their chest is gold in color hence the name. Other birds have orange-like coloration especially those that are found in the regions of Trinidad and Caribbean.

Although their ability to mimic or imitate is generally limited, there are varieties that got talking capabilities and some others can learn to speak up to 6 words. They may even speak in phrases especially those that are well-trained. You can spend a little time each day with them for training.

Generally, they possess great personalities. Sometimes they are extremely loud, nippy and destructive or aggressive but once they are tamed, they can be considered great pets.

Their basic care must be met namely - nutrition, exercise, shelter and social interaction. Generally, pellets are offered to these parrots for their diet with the addition of fruits and vegetables. Caging must be large enough to accommodate the large bird so that they can still have a little of activity inside.

For the most part all macaws share similar personalities and make good pet parrots it's more the color and size of the different species that is the deciding factor for someone that wants to buy a parrot.
