The Machin head stamps

Since 40 years, these iconic Great Britain's stamps have been around. Thousands of issues and booklets were produced. The machin head stamps were named after Arnold Machin, the artist behind them.

MACHIN SERIES

:See the list of machin stamps.

The Machin series of postage stamps is the main definitive stamp series in the United Kingdom, used since 5 June 1967. It is the second series to figure the image of Elizabeth II, replacing the Wilding series.

Designed by Arnold Machin, they consist simply of the sculpted profile of the Queen and a denomination, and are almost always in a single colour.

After four decades of service, the series has encompassed almost all changes and innovations in British stamp printing. This has been encouraging an abundant specialised philatelic collectors' market and associated literature.

While Arnold Machin's effigy of the Queen, created in 1964 for British coins was replaced in 1984 by an older-looking effigy by Raphael Maklouf, the design of the Machin stamps was never updated and the last proposals to these ends were rejected by the Queen herself.

Important books and catalogs about Machin stamps

QEII Specialised Definitives Catalogue

I am not a machin specialist, nor a machin collector.
My father is. He just bought this amazing specialised catalogue, so I got to take a peek...

It is amazing. Comes in 2 volumes, full color, with thousands of pictures.
It is probably one of the best on the market (short of Deegam I suppose). Published by the Machin collectors club.

Warning...reading this book may get you addicted to machin collecting.

The catalogue is available directly from The Machin Collectors Club, for 39.95 GBP + post and packing.

The Complete Deegam Machin Handbook

The Connoisseur Catalogue of Machin Stamps Online

The Connoisseur catalogue online.

The 11th edition will soon be available online (On their website).
Their web site is up and running and you can see some preview in pdf format.

Why an online edition? According to the publishers:

"Since the publication of the 10th Edition of the Connoisseur Catalogue and it's subsequent supplement a huge amount has happened in the Machin world. The rate of development continues unabated, making it impossible for a Machin catalogue to be produced that is not out of date as soon as it is published. Connoisseur Publications have decided to embrace technology as a means to counteract this problem, which has been the main cause in the delay of publication of an 11th edition.

Although several sections of a new edition have been worked on and completed, by the time that subsequent sections have been finished the earlier sections need further revision, a never-ending task!

Now, by utilising the internet, the Connoisseur Catalogue will be published in chapters as soon as they are completed, making them instantly available online. It is also the intention to update the catalogue on a much more frequent basis, a godsend to collectors in this rapidly moving field. Illustrations will also be in color, a significant upgrade to the black and white images in previous print editions."

A TIMELESS CLASSIC: The evolution of machin's icon

This book marks the 40th anniversary of the first stamp issued with the now classic image of Queen Elizabeth II created by Arnold Machin. An icon of monarchy and of Britain the image has been reproduced more than 200 billion times. Here Douglas N Muir, Curator of Philately at the BPMA, traces the evolution of the design from work on coins. Muir describes the revolution in British stamp design in the 1960s of which the Machin design was the culmination. This important study is based on a new research and a wealth of illustrations never seen before.

Machin collecting can be fun and stimulating! As I prepared these lists I began to better understand some of the "complexities" of the issues. The organization of the lists actually simplified the sorting of some of the varieties.
