Mackinac Island, a pretty island in Michigan

Mackinac Island is a small, pretty island just a few miles from the Michigan Mainland. You can get there by ferry from either St Ignace or Mackinaw City. The ferry ride takes about 15 minutes.

This lovely island has many historic homes and hotels. When you arrive there you really feel you have stepped back in time as no cars are allowed anywhere on the island. You get around Mackinac by horse and buggy, biking, or walking. There are lots of lovely shops to browse, and good restaurants.

The island has Mackinac state park which the National Geographic named one of the 10 best in the USA.

For people interested in history, Fort Mackinac was constructed by British soldiers during the American Revolution. Today, the original restored fort is a National Historic Landmark.

Mackinac Island's Grand Hotel

America's Summer Place

The Grand Hotel really deserves its name. It is over 100 years old, and has been visited by many well known people, including several US Presidents.

The front porch is over 600 feet long, and overlooks a lovely tea garden and swimming pool.

The movie Somewhere in Time with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour was filmed here.

This hotel really is an attraction itself, and has outstanding views of the island and the Mackinac Bridge

The hotel has over 300 rooms, and every room is different. That is right..... no two guest rooms in the hotel are the same.

What to do on Mackinac Island

One of the best ways to explore the island is to take one of the many carriage tours available. You can even rent your own carriage or discover all the island has to offer on horseback.

For the more adventuresome you can rent bicycles.

There are many interesting shops which include clothing, gifts, fudge and candies. Several artists live on the island and their paintings are available in several galleries. My favorite store is Lilacs and Lace which has victorian china, jewelry, bath and body products and jewelry cases.

There are two golf courses, one at the Grand Hotel and the other is the Wawashkamo Golf Club

Kids and families can enjoy the Original Butterfly House This has an 1800 sq ft tropical garden with hundreds of butterflies.

Accommodations include stately hotels, bed and breakfast, condos and suites. The island has a permanent population of about 500 but this increases dramatically in the spring and especially the busy summer season. Reservations at any place should be made well in advance.

Thanks for this! Sleeping Bear Dunes and Traverse Bay, Petoskey, and Cheboygan are among Hemingway-ish places the old folk talked about, some of which I've visited. I almost moved up there one summer, and I'll always have a soft spot for Mackinac. Many years ago I looked into a college in Houghton.
