Macrobiotic Diet for Weight Loss

Resources on losing weight with Macrobiotic Diet.  You'll find techniques, videos, recipes, books, communities, restaurants and a lot more.

But there's more to it than just a diet, apparently, it has been around for years and the diet has helped people with cancer, diabetes and other ailments.  As they say, it's a way of life!  Macrobiotic diet is not just a diet, it is also a belief on a certain lifestyle.

The macrobiotic food diet, popularized by Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow, is based on the Chinese belief that whatever you eat must balance the opposing forces of the universe known as 'yin' and 'yang.' Certain foods such as whole grains, leafy vegetables, protein from fish and legumes, some fruit and broth soups create balance. Others cause too much 'shifting' between the forces; banned foods such as meat, eggs and cheese, are too far 'yang' while sugar, spices, coffee and alcohol are too 'yin.'  Macrobiotic diet is similar to a vegan-like food pattern without animal food consumed.

Does Macrobiotics Work?

Many studies show how diet directly influences physical and mental conditions, therefore, it is difficult to discern if the macrobiotic lifestyle, rather than just maintaining a healthy diet, is necessary for benefits. Although there are many stories supporting the success of macrobiotics, there has never been a specific study targeting the macrobiotic lifestyle.

Why Do People Follow this Diet?

Macrobiotic diet appeals to those who are health-minded individuals who seeks a holistic approach to spiritual and physical well-being. A Number of anecdotal reports exist of medical conditions improving dramatically on a macrobiotic. In addition, some people with serious medical conditions, including cancer and AIDS, try this diet because they have heard it may help cure their disease. To date, such claims have not been substantiated by controlled research.

Benefits of Macrobiotic Diet

It's more than just a diet...

In the macrobiotic diet, foods are selected for their metaphysical qualities rather than their nutritional value. The regime, which is high in whole grains, vegetables, beans, and soy protein, has many of the same benefits as a vegetarian or vegan diet. Numerous scientific studies have shown that a diet of this type can significantly reduce the risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and various cancers. The macrobiotic diet is rich in vitamins, high in dietary fiber, and low in fatty foods.

Macrobiotic Tips and Advice - by Melody Gardot of macrobiotics.co.uk

WAYS TO MAKE MACROBIOTICS WORK FOR YOU

1. KEEP COOKING BOOKS HANDY for referring to recipes. It keeps you from forgetting exactly what you need and how to cook things when you're just beginning.

2. KEEP FOOD SUPPLIES ORGANIZED to eliminate scavenger hunts while your items are cooking. Keep all your grains in containers clearly marked, all your refrigerated items neat and all your seaweeds together. Do this for your pots and cooking supplies as well.

4. KEEP TRACK OF WHAT YOU'RE EATING with a calendar noting the breakfast lunch and dinners that you plan to eat each day. Start with a weekly calendar. This way, you know that you're balancing meals throughout the day not just taking certain meals and cooking them again and again. Macrobiotics is about balance and just because you're cooking macrobiotic foods doesn't mean you're getting the right ones.

5. KEEP TRACK OF HOW YOU FEEL while you are in the midst of adjusting. It took me three months to notice anything. I had a great deal of toxicity from medication and months of eating the wrong foods that needed to be eliminated from my body. Those months were hard adjusting to the new food and how my body felt. By keeping track I was able to see the improvements.

6. PACK A TO GO BAG so that when you are out you don't reach for junk. It s the hardest thing to deal with road cravings especially when you are bombarded by temptation after temptation screaming "24 hour' or "drive though". By keeping food with you in a lunch bag, you can resist temptation and eat what you should.

WAYS TO MAKE MACROBIOTICS WORK FOR YOU

7. EAT AT HOME because you'll find it's hard to figure out what's in the foods you order in restaurants. Some places use oil some don't. Some places microwave, some don't. Since you are going to need every bit of help you can get to make sure you are really making a change for the good, pass on lunch with friends out at your old favorite restaurant and instead offer to cook for them at your place.

8. SHARE THE JOY WITH A FRIEND who is eating macrobiotic as well. Some people find it hard to do lifestyle changes alone. Macrobiotics can be as strict or as loose as you like, but you'll feel better knowing you're not alone in your change. Go to health stores and start up conversation with someone who is buying the same tofu as you. It might turn out they eat macrobiotic too. Go to a yoga center and meet people. Often people who practice Yoga look to macrobiotics for health. No matter how you do it, find a friend to share the joy of living life with macrobiotics.

9. INCORPORATE OTHER MEANS OF HEALTHY LIVING with yoga, tai chi or meditation. Doing so will keep you calmer and promote happiness. The breathing exercises involved help to soothe your nerves and ease your mind so you can appreciate each day more so. One of the concepts of macrobiotics is to sit down and eat your meal slowly so you enjoy each meal and you are thankful for the food before you. In modern society people are lucky if they get a 30 minute lunch break so it's very important to keep yourself calm and chew your food well despite being on a tight schedule. Breathing exercises can help in this way.

10. STAY MOTIVATED by rewarding yourself for a job well done. Look in awe at the improvement you have made and the knowledge you have gained. You learn by doing and with macrobiotics, you'll quickly see that it is much more than a diet, it's a lifestyle. And the rewards of living this way are far greater than you could have ever imagined.

Top Ten Sugar Craving Strategies

Reducing your desire or addiction for sugar should not require Herculean will power. Becoming conscious of the physiological and lifestyle factors that stimulate sugar cravings should make taming your sweet tooth a piece of cake-so to speak.

  1. Reduce salt and products with salt. The need for dietary salt from natural sources (sun-dried sea salt) is dependent on several factors; a lack of salt can cause fatigue, stimulate a desire to overeat and often result in a craving or animal protein. However, with the availability of good quality sea salt, miso paste, tamari soy sauce and natural pickles, it's quite easy to overdose. Thirst and a craving for sweet foods is one of the most reliable indicators of excess dietary salt.
  2. Reduce animal protein. The meat and potatoes mentality has to re-think its philosophy since established research shows excess animal protein can lead to colon and prostate cancer. If this applies to you eat less in volume (2 to 4 ounce servings) and limit it to three to four times per week (maximum), as opposed to daily.
  3. Reduce food volume. Overeating leads to fatigue and sluggishness. This makes a stimulant like sugar (or coffee) more appealing. Eating more frequently (see #4, below) will allow you to reduce overeating with a minimum of effort.
  4. Eat more frequently throughout the day. One of the most common reasons for sugar cravings--especially at night. By skipping meals or waiting long periods you stop supplying your blood with glucose. The blood sugar drops and by the time you finally get around to eating, you're going nuts for simple sugar.
  5. Avoid eating prior to bed. Eat a light evening dinner at least 21/2 to three hours before retiring.
  6. Avoid sugar. Continuing to eat simple sugars results in a falling blood sugar. This stimulates a need for more sugar and the cycle continues. Even though fruit is a simple sugar, switching to fruit instead of sugar is a good first step.
  7. Exercise moderately but consistently. Daily aerobic exercise will increase circulation and strengthen will power. Brisk walking, biking, light jogging, etc. naturally increases sensitivity to the effects of sugar.
  8. Emphasize natural, whole complex carbohydrates. If your daily diet is includes whole grains (brown rice, oats, millet, barley, etc.), vegetables (roots, greens and round vegetables such as squashes, cabbages, etc.) as a primary fuel, you'll find you automatically crave less sugar.
  9. Don't suppress feelings. This doesn't mean you have to broadcast every feeling--only those that matter and to those who really matter to you. Food indulgence, especially with sweets, is a convenient way to anesthetize feelings.
  10. Beware of psychological triggers. The many psychological associations we connect with food have a powerful influence. Beware of family associations, movie rituals, familiar restaurants, childhood habits, etc.

The Unifying Principle

Yin and Yang

By observing our day-to-day thoughts and activities, we can easily see that
everything is in motion - or, in other words, everything changes.

Starting from this basic understanding, we can classify all phenomena into
either of the two categories, yin or yang. Since these are relative terms,
however, nothing in the world is absolutely yin or absolutely yang; all
phenomena possess both in varying degrees.

Yin and yang are always changing into one another in a continual cycle,
reflected in the change from night to day and winter to summer, breathing
in and breathing out, etc. Contraction, or yang, produces heat, which
eventually results in expansion or yin; while expansion produces coldness,
which then results in contraction. As a result, vegetation growing in a more
yin, or cold, climate is usually smaller, while vegetation in a more yang, or
hot, climate is usually larger.
