Screenflow
Best Mac Screen Recorder
ScreenFlow from Telestream takes screencasting software to the next level. With a beautiful and simple interface, ScreenFlow uses all of Snow Leopard's core animation features to the max, providing an environment for you to capture, edit, and output your screencasts with ease.Want to add an animation? Just click a button and make your changes. No confusing waveform or curves to adjust. And even when dealing with the most CPU-demanding effects, ScreenFlow handles it with ease. No need to render your clip when editing. No need for dropped frames. ScreenFlow truly redefines what good screencasting software is. For a look at some of the things that make ScreenFlow revolutionary.
Screenflow also won Best Screencasting Application at Macworld 2009.

Screenflow is also the best software I've tried for recording games on the Mac. Works flawlessly and has very nice editing features as well as being able to upload directly to Youtube.
iShowU
by ShineyWhiteBox
iShowU allows you to capture and record anything you can see on your screen, along with audio from any compatible source. Ever been in the situation where you wanted to show someone what was going on, but couldn't? Either the person is not right next to you, not around, in another country (the list goes on). Now just record what you're doing and what you want to say, and stick it in an email!==> Try iShowU
Snapz Pro X
Ambrosia Software
Capturing movies is amazingly easy, and all of the movie settings are ready and at your finger tips before you start recording. You can choose what part of your screen Snapz Pro X should watch when recording a movie, or set it to follow your cursor. You can also force the recording area to certain aspect ratios -- especially handy if you know your movie must fill a specific sized space. The movie capture feature also supports recording audio
at the same time. If you are giving a live presentation that you need to offer online later, you can record what you say while performing your demo. Snapz Pro X keeps the video and audio properly synced, and once you are finished it encodes a QuickTime file with the settings you specify.

Screenflick
Araelium Group
Screenflick features high performance screen capturing for smooth, fluid motion up to 60 fps. Screenflick can record any portion of the screen, simultaneously recording audio from internal or external microphones and the system audio.- Record your screen up to 60 fps
- Record your system audio
- Record your microphone
- Export movies at multiple quality levels
- Display keyboard shortcuts and mouse clicks
- An excellent utility for software screencasters and software trainers, Screenflick offers the ability to display keyboard commands, and highlights mouse clicks to better communicate which actions are being performed during screen recording.
Unlike other solutions, Screenflick allows you to record a movie once and compress it as many times as you want at different resolutions, qualities, and with or without audio, offering you the maximum amount of flexibility when choosing which presentation options to offer to movie viewers.

ScreenMimic
Screen Mimic allows you to create screencasts (recordings of your Mac OS X desktop) that can be saved as Adobe Flash (SWF), Flash Video (FLV), or Quicktime (MOV) files. These files can be easily uploaded to a website, used in a kiosk system, and many other applications. Screen Mimic is a great tool for creating screen recordings, flash demos, software training videos, and application demos.Learn more about ScreenMimic
Free Alternatives for Mac Screen Capture
To use the program, drag and resize the floating window to cover the area you want to capture. Then click in the window to capture the screenshot. You can resize it, copy it to the clipboard, and save it in a variety of formats and locations. Its behavior is customizable with respect to what happens after a capture. A newly added movie recording mode now allows up to a one minute long QuickTime movie (no sound) to be produced.
capture me window
What advantage does Capture Me hold over the built in OS X screencapture facility? For some tasks, the answer is simple - there is none - the built in screen shot is elegant and easy to use. However, there are occasions when it's nice to be able to choose what file format your capture saves in, copy it to the clipboard without holding down four keys at once, or resize it on the fly. It's also common to want to take successive shots of the exact same position on the screen without moving the capture region at all, or make all your captures the same size. These tasks are trivial with Capture Me, but difficult at best with the built in utilities. Another possible use is as a floating capture pad - see the comment below for an example of one user who does this.

- Hi! Thanks for the reviews. I've tested a bunch of these software now, but I can't get rid of the cursor image even though many of them have an option to set the cursor invisible. Does anyone have an idea why this doesn't work? I have Mac OS X 10.5.8 and trying to record drawing in Photoshop so that the cursor wouldn't show...

- Daniel- Check out Screencast-o-matic for a good free capture utility. The biggest advantage is that it will export to mp4 so you can edit it. I've been using it for some time now and have been really impressed considering the price! It is browser based so you can actually use it anywhere as well.
I am looking to upgrade to something better so thanks to everyone for their input.

- Karen thank you,
Screencast-o-matic is awesome! I needed to record an 8 minute video from youtube and this did the job nicely. Quick and easy. Although the free version has a water-mark on the finished video, no big deal for me.
Thanks Again Karen for info on this website.
God Bless!

- I just played around with all these because I need a new screen recorder. I ended up purchasing ScreenFlick because of the compatibility with iMovie. I don't know why IShowHD had such issues with iMovie, but it was my second choice. $25 bucks and ScreenFlick was the perfect solution for me! Great list though very help full! I also played around with Jing, but not worth the $15 bucks a year when I can pay 25 and have way more options with ScreenFlick and IShowU HD!

- I'm not familiar with Hypercam but from looking at their website, it seems that Screenflow and iShowU is what your looking for however they are commercial applications and you'll need to buy a license. You can try one of the free options but I've never used any of them.

- Jing is the only free screen recording software I know of that works well on Mac OSX. It's fine for uploading captures to the free Jing server, but unless you pay a fee, it saves video in its own proprietary format, which can NOT be edited in QT or iMovie, nor can it be uploaded to YouTube.

- IShowU completely solved my problem for converting SWF files into Quicktime. Great for those people trying to use SWF files in an Apple Keynote. Really easy and fast and quality is perfect.

- iShowU looks like it may be the one for us… But I hadn't realized there would be issues with how much of the screen we can capture. My son wants to capture computer gameplay, which requires the ability to capture the full screen. If we had the option to do either full screen or partial screen, that would be ideal. I'm on a 15" MacBook Pro.

- Hi Penina,
Were you (or anyone else) able to find a screen capture program that allows you to enlarge the capture area (scroll it) to image (ie: jpeg) capture an area that is bigger than the visible window?
Please let me know...

- DO NOT get iShowu pro. Its really quite crap, I've been using it for awhile now and for basic things it works okay but for anything like recording a game with lots of movements you're out of luck

- Hello, is there any software for free besides Capture me? When I downloaded it, I figured out it's just a screen shot application. Is there a video capture application for free you may recommend?

- Jing project is a free app from TechSmith. Not a lot of features, but works well.
There is also the New? Mac version of Camtasia studio, which has been the leader on the Windows side for some time.

- Hi Gary
Compared to other mac screen recording software, Screenflow captures the entire screen. Whilst this is a different approach I quite like it. Screenflow allows you the ability to use the full desktop while recording like in a normal workflow but provides rich features to zoom in to specific areas when you need to providing what I think is a good end user experience. It also means you don't have to cramp everything into a fixed window size. I think once you get used to recording that way you'll probably think it's not so bad.

- Screenflow is good but I cant see anyway to capture just a window, it always wants to capture the whole desktop which is a major limitation in my opinion.

- I've used Snapz ProX for over a year and am looking for something better. My complaints are this:
1) If I'm recording a "sized" window (Say a webex presentation), and the presenter changes to an area that spills over my window, I cannot resize that window while I'm recording, this ruins the recording because of complaint #2.
2) Once I stop a recording, I cannot begin another one. I have to edit / save the current one first. If I need to stop recording to resize an area, I cannot again begin my capture
3) Snapz ProX seems to add about 10 - 15 seconds onto my login time as it imbeds itself into the Finder Stuff. This is annoying; technically necessary, but annoying.

- ScreenFlow allows me to pause one capture, open a new recording (choosing a different source - different monitor, or iSight, etc) and then at the end of that new recording, I can merge with the first or save that as a new one. Just made a quick video of this & posted to youtube (watch?v=MdSq_kCD-AQ)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdSq_kCD-AQ
ALSO Just learned that Quick Time 7 Player on Snow Leopard has a pretty cool FREE built in Screen Recording feature...
