Hey, Stella McCartney? It boggles the mind the designer items "made in Hungary!" It's not just goulash!

As you may have guessed from the title, this lens is about anything that is "made in Hungary."  I personally wasn't "made in Hungary" or born there, but my grandfather was.  In May 2004, I had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of traveling to Hungary and Romania to "trace my roots" to see my grandparents birth city. That is my inspiration for this particular lens.

When a person thinks of Hungary, probably the first thing that pops into his or her mind is goulash.  But, when you think about Hungary, it's really "not just goulash;" it is so much more!  How appropriate that the term "goulash" in English is occasionally used to mean any mixture of diverse things.  That's what this lens is also about ... a goulash of diverse things 'made in Hungary!'

Made in Hungary . . . a labor of love!

With more Made in Eastern European countries ...

This lens has been a "labor of love" as I put a lot of passion into writing and compiling the data and hope you will find lots of helpful information if you are planning a trip to Hungary or want to buy something that is "made in Hungary."

"Made in Hungary," quickly became part of my trilogy of "made in" lenses when I next wrote a similar lens about all the designer brands that are "made in Romania."  I quickly followed up those two made in lenses with my trilogy "Made in Poland" lens along with three different groups, Everything Eastern European, Everything Hungarian, and Everything Romanian!

In addition, I've written 2 additional "made in" lenses: "Made in Bulgaria" and "Made in Czech Republic."  I hope you are able to take some time to check out all my "made in" lenses as they are jam-packed with a diversity of information sure to amaze you!   You won't believe all the wonderful, recognizable designer brands which are made in Eastern European countries!

A Pictorial of Old Hungary

Setting the mood for this lens!

These pictures are of old Hungary, Szatmar-Nemeti, which is known today as Satu Mare, Romania. I've included them as an introduction to my lens so that you can get in the mood for "made in Hungary!" I took these pictures when we traveled to Hungary and Romania in May, 2004. What an incredible experience this was and I'm happy to share my pictures with you. I hope you enjoy.

Audi TT is "made in Hungary"

The Audi TT is a sports car produced by Audi since 1998 in Gyor, Hungary. The TT was first shown as a concept car at the 1995 Frankfurt Motor Show. The design is credited to J Mays and Freeman Thomas of Volkswagen's California design studio, with Martin Smith contributing to the award winning interior design. The TT name does not indicate "twin turbo" as is sometimes assumed. The car is named for the NSU TT, a small rear-engine model with a formidable racing pedigree that NSU produced in the 1960s and was based on the NSU Prinz, although the modern TT shares next to nothing with that model's design concepts. The NSU TT was, in turn, named for the famous Isle of Man TT (Tourist Trophy) motorcycle races.

I've featured the Audi TT in my lens, The Best Roadsters Ever.

An eBay Find: Coat of Arms Pin

The Expected for "Made in Hungary"

Beautiful Hungarian Coat of Arms Pin with Flag. Remember March 15, 1848.

The coat of arms of Hungary was adopted in July 1990, after the end of the Socialist regime, although it has been used before, both with and without the crown, sometimes as part of a larger, more complex coat of arms, and many of its elements date back to the Middle Ages.

The most ancient element of the coat of arms is the patriarchal cross, which shows Byzantine influence.

The red and white stripes were the symbol of the House of Árpád and they were first used in the coat of arms in 1202 on a seal of King Imre.

An eBay Find: Kermit Pez

The Unexpected for "Made in Hungary"

Kermit the Frog, Ms. Piggy's Love, Pez Dispenser. U.S. Patent #4966305. Made in Hungary. This item was offered by an eBay seller who stated their address as Russiaville, Indiana. Initial bid amount of only $0.01.

The word "PEZ" comes from the German word for peppermint, which is pfefferminz. You take the first, middle, and last letters of the German word - PfeffErminZ, put them together and you get "PEZ". PEZ was invented in 1927 in Vienna, Austria by a candyman named Edward Haas III.

It was an adult breath mint that he decided to market as an alternative for smoking. Haas Food Manufacturing Corporation of Vienna, Austria, was the first to sell PEZ candies. Pez dispensers have been made in and imported from Hungary, Austria, Czech Republic, China, Hong Kong, Yugoslavia, and Slovenia.

Learn more about the history of the PezHeads Mailing List: http://www.pezlist.com/history.html.

Check out Kenai Pez Miniatures.

Pez at a glance

PEZ is the brand name of an Austrian confectionery and the pocket mechanical dispensers it was sold in. The confectionery itself takes the shape of pressed, dry, straight-edged blocks (15mm (5/8 inch) long, 8mm wide and 5mm high), with PEZ dispensers holding 12 PEZ pieces.

The name PEZ was derived from the letters at the start, the middle and the end of the German word for peppermint, Pfefferminz, the first PEZ flavor. PEZ was originally introduced in Austria, later exported, notably to the U.S., and eventually became available worldwide. The all-uppercase spelling of PEZ echoes the trademark's style of type on packaging and the dispensers themselves, drawn in perspective and looking as if the letters were built out of 44 brick-like PEZ confectioneries (14 bricks in the P and 15 in each of the E and Z).

Despite the widespread recognition of the PEZ dispenser, the company considers itself to be primarily a confectionery company, and says it produces over 3 billion confectionery bricks each year in the U.S. alone. PEZ Dispensers are part of popular culture in many nations. Because of the large number of dispenser designs over the years, PEZ dispensers are collected by enthusiasts.

Originally called the "Magic Cube",[http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1112396/Driven-mad-Rubiks-nut-weeps-solving-cube--26-years-trying.html Driven mad' Rubik's nut weeps on solving cube... after 26 years of trying], Daily Mail Reporter, 12th January 2009. the puzzle was licensed by Rubik to be sold by Ideal Toys in 1980 and won the German Game of the Year special award for Best Puzzle that year. As of January 2009, 350 million cubes have sold worldwide making it the world's top-selling puzzle game.Marshall, Ray. Squaring up to the Rubchallenge. icNewcastle. Retrieved August 15 2005. It is widely considered to be the world's best-selling toy.

In a classic Rubik's Cube, each of the six faces is covered by 9 stickers, among six solid colours (traditionally white, red, blue, orange, green, and yellow). A pivot mechanism enables each face to turn independently, thus mixing up the colours. For the puzzle to be solved, each face must be a solid colour.

Similar puzzles have now been produced with various numbers of stickers, not all of them by Rubik. The original 3×3×3 version celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary in 2005.

An eBay Find: Coach Handbag

The Unexpected for "Made in Hungary"

Coach Black Smooth Leather Station Bag. 9" wide, 9 1/2" high, 2" deep without the front pocket. The interior is unlined natural suede. Coach creed inside states it was made in Hungary, L7U-5130.

Coach handbags got its start when its founders--Miles and Lillian Cahn--noticed how distinctive the leather used in baseball gloves was and how well it lasted in spite of rough handling. So began Coach handbags in 1941 with their first refined leather bags, built to stand the test of time.

Six artisans began Coach in a loft in Manhattan, New York and the company has since stayed in New York in a larger location to allow for its expansion. Only the top 10% of quality leather is chosen to become a Coach handbag.

In 1960, Miles and Lillian Cahn, decided to create a retail collection. They asked Cashin to become their designer. Cashin was not able to join coach till 1962 due to various other obligations.

Cashin designed for Coach from 1962 to 1972. These 1970 design ideas are still carried on in some current Coach lines.

Sara Lee bought Coach in 1985. It operated as a division of the larger company until 19.5% of it was spun off in October 2000. Sara Lee decided to divest the rest of its Coach ownership the following year and the company became its own entity in April 2001.

Coach is not only made in the United States! Coach did start out in NYC but, as it expanded and grew, Coach took on outsourcing. Besides the U.S., Coach bags and accessories have been made in Costa Rica, Turkey, Mexico, Hungary, Italy, Dominican Republic and China.

An eBay Find: Coach Scooter

This is now my personal treasure!

When I spotted this Coach purse on eBay, I knew I just had to have it! It's now mine. You know why I bought it? Yes, that's right, because it "was handcrafted in Hungary."

Luckily, this leather scooter bag is in EXCELLENT condition. I'd sure would have been disappointed if it wasn't as there was a bidding war for this item!

The seller states "it was purchased from a Coach store in Chicago." It bears the number "B7U-9893" which seems to coincide with other Coach products that have been handcrafted in Hungary.

I love the compactness of this bag; it's about 7" x 5-1/2" which makes it a good camera bag! In addition to a camera bag, I've been using this bag now as my football game day bag AND it actually was my purse of choice for our last European vacation to Prague and the Czech Republic. Kind of going full circle; you know, made in Hungary, and used in Czech Republic. Get it???

Hungary (; , ), officially the Republic of Hungary (Magyar Köztársaság "Hungarian Republic"), is a landlocked country in the Carpathian Basin of Central Europe, bordered by Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, and Slovenia. Its capital is Budapest. Hungary is a member of OECD, NATO, EU, V4 and is a Schengen state. The official language is Hungarian.

Following a Celtic (after c. 450 BC) and a Roman (9 BC ? c. 5th century) period, the foundation of Hungary was laid in the late Ninth Century by the Magyar chieftain Árpád, whose great grandson Stephen I ascended to the throne with a crown sent from Rome in 1000. The Kingdom of Hungary existed with interruptions for 946 years, and was at times regarded as one of the cultural centers of the Western world (particularly during Stephen I, Béla III, Louis I, Matthias I, and Lajos Kossuth's regency). A significant power until its defeat in World War I, Hungary lost over two-thirds of its territory (along with 3.3 million...

Brief History & Overview of Hungary

The Country of the Magyars

Magyar Köztársaság or Hungary (Magyarország) is a landlocked country. It had been a seaside country before the Treaty of Trianon, in Central Europe, bordered by Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro, Croatia and Slovenia. It is known locally as the Country of the Magyars.

In the time of the Roman Empire, the Romans called the region Pannonia (west from the Danube river). After Rome fell under the Germanic tribes migration and Carpians' pressure, the Migration Period continued bringing many invaders. First came the Huns, who built up a powerful empire under Attila.

The name "Hungary" may be influenced by the name of the Hun people, although it probably comes from the name of a later, 7th century Turkic alliance called Onogur. After the Hunnish rule faded, the other Germanic tribes Lombards and Gepids ruled in Pannonia for about 100 years, during which the Slavic tribes also began migrating south.

In the 560s, these were supplanted by the Avars who would maintain their supremacy of the land for over two centuries. The Franks under Charlemagne from the west and the Bulgars from the southeast finally managed to overthrow the Avars in the early 9th century. Soon after, the Franks retreated, and the Slavonic kingdom of Great Moravia and the Balaton Principality controlled much of Pannonia until the end of the century. Finally, the Magyars migrated to Hungary in the late 9th century.

The country of Hungary isn't very big geographically; some 107 Hungaries would fit inside Canada. It has 111 people per sq. kilometer which is much higher than Canada at 3.1.

The climate and weather of Hungary is quite similar to that of the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia. Hungary enjoys lots of fresh produce in summer from fruits and vegetables to wheat crops.

The 1956 Hungarian Revolution

Imre Nagy was executed on June 16, 1958.

At 4:15 a.m. on November 4, 1956, Soviet forces launched a major attack on Hungary aimed at crushing the national uprising that began 12 days earlier. At 5:20 a.m., Hungarian Prime Minister Imre Nagy announced the invasion to the nation in a grim, 35-second broadcast, declaring: "Our troops are fighting. The Government is in its place."

Within hours Nagy himself sought asylum at the Yugoslav Embassy in Budapest while his former colleague and imminent replacement, János Kádár, who had been flown secretly from Moscow to the city of Szolnok, 60 miles southeast of the capital, prepared to take power with Moscow's backing.

On November 22nd, after receiving assurances of safe passage from Kádár and the Soviets, Nagy finally agreed to leave the Yugoslav Embassy. But he was immediately arrested by Soviet security officers when the Yugoslav bus was seized by the Soviet military.

Five days later, Nagy and his group were flown to Romania. Although Soviet leaders hoped to persuade him to endorse the new government of Janos Kadar, he refused.

By then, the fighting had mostly ended, the Hungarian resistance had essentially been destroyed, and Kádár was entering the next phase of his strategy to neutralize dissent for the long term.

Nagy was held prisoner for approximately two years. After a secret trial, Nagy was executed on June 16, 1958, at age 62.

Budapest (, also or ; ; Category: Names of European cities in different languages - : B|names in other languages) is the capital of Hungary. As the largest city of Hungary, it serves as the country's principal political, cultural, commercial, industrial, and transportation center and is considered an important hub in Central Europe. In 2008, Budapest had 1,702,297 inhabitants, down from a mid-1980s peak of 2.1 million. The Budapest Commuter Area (or Greater Budapest) is home to 3,271,110 people.History of the Budapest Commuter Association (English))Settlements of the Budapest Commuter Area (Hungarian) The city covers an area of within the city limits. Budapest became a single city occupying both banks of the river Danube with a unification on 17 November 1873 of right-bank Buda and Óbuda with left-bank Pest.Molnar, A Concise History of Hungary, Chronology pp. 15.

Aquincum, originally a Celtic settlement, was the direct ancestor of Budapest, becoming the Roman capital of Lower Pannonia. Magyars arrived in the territory in the 9th century. Their first settlement was pillaged by the Mongols in 1241-42. The re-established town became one of the centers of Renaissance humanist culture in the 15th century. Following the Battle of Mohács and nearly 150 years of Ottoman rule,Molnar, A Concise History of Hungary, Chronology pp. 15 development of the region entered a new age of prosperity in the 18th and 19th centuries, and Budapest became an alpha world city after the 1873 unification. It also became the second capital of Austria-Hungary, a great power that dissolved in 1918. Budapest was the focal point of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, the Hungarian Soviet Republic of 1919, Operation Panzerfaust in 1944, the Battle of Budapest of 1945, and the Revolution of 1956.

Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, its extensive World Heritage Site includes the banks of the Danube, the Buda Castle Quarter, Andrássy Avenue, Heroes' Square and the Millennium Underground Railway, the second oldest in Europe. Other highlights include a total of 80 geothermal springs, the world's largest thermal water cave system, second largest synagogue, and third largest Parliament building. The collections of the Natural History Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts are also significant.

The city ranked 3rd (out of 65 cities) on Mastercard's Emerging Markets Index (2008), and ranked as the most livable Central/Eastern European city on EIU's quality of life index (2009). It attracts over 20 million visitors a year. The headquarters of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) and the first foreign office of the CIPA will be in Budapest.

  • Margret Island. We actually walked this 2.5 km island! It's a public park in the middle of the Danube River, between Buda and Pest. On the island you will find the Centennial Monument, 2 swimming pools, the ruins of the Franciscan church and monastery, the octagonal water tower, an open air theatre, the Japanese Gardens, the Musical Fountain and a modern thermal spa beneath the Margitsziget Thermal Hotel. We actually spotted a topless sunbather there!

Hungarian Gypsies

Ethnic Minority of Hungary

The Gypsies in Hungary
The Gypsies are Europe's most deprived and fastest growing ethnic minority.
They comprise several distinct tribes originating from Central and
North-Western India between the 5th and 12th centuries.
Hungarian Gypsy Music: Whose Heritage?
The Hungarian instrumental dance music of the early 19th century--so-called "verbunkos" music--along with Hungarian popular songs ("magyar nóta" in Hungarian) and the csárdás, are referred to even by Hungarians themselves using one word, cigányzene (Gypsy music).
Golden Age of Gypsy Bands
In the second half of the nineteenth century, the word 'Gypsy' as used in Hungary and abroad most probably referred to Hungarian Gypsy musicians rather than to the Gypsy ethnic group in general.
Hungarian-Speaking Gypsies
Each tribe had its own occupation and spoke a separate language or dialect of Romany (the original Gypsy tongue). Hungarian-speaking Gypsies, or Romungros who were among the first to come to Hungary centuries ago, produced bricks and did other work with adobe. Romungros were also musicians from the eighteenth century onwards.

Hungarian Gypsy, Romani people, at a glance

The Romani (also Romany, Romanies, Romanis, Roma or Roms; exonym: Gypsies; ) are an ethnic group of Europe tracing their origins to medieval India.

The Romani are widely dispersed with their largest concentrated populations in Europe, especially the Roma of Central and Eastern Europe, with more recent diaspora populations in the Americas and, to a lesser extent, in other parts of the world.

Their Romani language is divided into several dialects, which add up to a total number of speakers larger than 2 million. The total number of Romani people is however at least twice as large (several times as large according to high estimates), and many Romani are native speakers of the language current in their country of residence, or of mixed languages combining the two.
