Controversy
Madonna encountered a lot of controversy when she first started out. She was criticized for wearing a crucifix and glamorizing teen pregnancy.
Lady GaGa is criticized for going out in (what looks like) her underwear and encouraging teens to go out and get drunk.
Are they both just media savvy? What's the old saying - it doesn't matter what they're saying as long as they're saying something.
Déjà vu
Lady GaGa parades around in her underwear inspired clothes.........does anyone else remember Madonna's pointy bra on the Blonde Ambition Tour?
Lady GaGa is certainly very open about flaunting her body. In an early interview she said that she was singing in a club and no one was listening. What is a girl to do? Apparently she striped down to her bra and panties and people started to listen and clap!!
I guess she thought well I'll keep it going.......

Copycat or Heir Apparent?
So while it's true on paper Madonna and Lady GaGa would appear to have a lot in common has Lady GaGa just copied a few pages out of Madonna's playbook? I guess we have to just wait and see.
Madonna has proven to her fans and critics alike that she IS the Queen of Reinvention. Lady GaGa claims that she can be, but only time will tell.
Shared Influences
What I find interesting is that although Madonna was already in the charts before Lady GaGa was born they do have some shared influences. They both cite classical music and Led Zeppelin as musical influences. They also both draw on Andy Warhol for conceptual influences.

I think that there are a lot of similarities, and that Lady Gaga has the potential to be the new Madonna. I don't think she's a copycat of Madonna, though they share several common traits. Lady Gaga could be "the new Madonna" in the sense that she could be the next superstar who stays popular as long as Madonna has. The biggest thing they have in common is that beneath all the flash and dazzle, they both have true talent. That's the one thing that will make Gaga the heir apparent.

I think Lady gaga is a Madonna-wanna-be that never-will-be. She's a ditsy copycat with no originality who is not worthy to walk in the shadow of Madonna. I've seen small-town drag shows that are more interesting than anything Lady Gaga's publicists may tell her to do.

- Great lens! I think Lady Gaga is the heir apparent. If there's one thing Madonna knew/knows, it's hot to promote herself. Lady Gaga seems to be almost her equal there. But all the promotion in the world can't get you there if you're a no-talent. Both of these ladies are very talented as well.
