Conserving Your Needlework For Future Generations
Tips From A Professional Picture Framer
So it just make sense that after you spend potentially month creating these wonderful heirlooms that you should indeed frame them in such a way so that you can enjoy them now as well as generations from now.
Important Considerations For Framing Your Needlework
Use Conservation Grade Materials Particularly in your matboards but also the backboards. As these materials breakdown over time they release acids which is why you matboard takes on a yellow tinge after a few years. These acids can and do migrate into the needlework or cross stitch and may cause discoloration over time.
But Conservation Materials Cost MoreThey do cost more but one thing to to consider is that non-conservation grade materials tend to fade really quickly and so need to be replaced more often so in the long run cost effectiveness in not really a factor.
Use Glazing Or Glass When Framing Your Needlework This really helps to cut down on air-born pollutants like smoke, dust, grease (if hung in a kitchen) or moisture (if hung in a bathroom) not to mention bugs.
Provide An Airspace Between Glass & Cross Stitch Surface The airspace is extremely important as it retards mold growth. In fact matboard was actually created for this purpose however archival picture framing spacers can also be used to achieve the desired effect..
Wash The Cross Stitch Before Framing This will not only make it as fresh and clean as possible before going to the expense of framing but it will also help to remove oils and spores which may grow once sealed up in the framing.
Do Not Hang In Moisture Rich Environments Primarily this means bathrooms where humidity is highest in most homes. Unless you think a particular cross stitch is merely a temporary decoration I would avoid hanging them here.

- While I would have thought that Madonna and Child cross stitch patterns were projects for the devout, I have to say that they are beautiful as pieces of art too.
