Mage Knight Collectible Miniatures Game

Mage Knight was the first game that sported Wizkids' clix bases. These inventive bases made the game more compact because the stats of the playing pieces were embedded into the base of the figure. The Players did not have to lug around a lot of rulebooks to play. Instead, they could lug around even more miniatures! And the figures were collectible with some rare and powerful pieces attracting a huge demand from miniature collectors.

For several years, the game has been put on hiatus after Wizkids was bought out by NECA. In 2010, Wizkids/NECA announced a comeback for Mage Knights.

The Return of Mage Knight

In October 21 2010, Wizkids, now under NECA, has announced the return of Mage knight. For now, details are scant. The company would only reveal that the line will be expanded into "other platforms". The initial product will be a board game.

The Mage Knight Dilemma

reasons for the Mage Knight hiatus

Mage Knight Sentry GolemObviously, fans would like this great game to make a comeback. However, there are significant roadblocks for NECA the new owners. Essentially, if done wrong they will risk alienating the present fan base. And there are several ways they can get it wrong.

Because of the long history of the game there were several rules modifications. A revival with simpler rules may not appeal to veteran players although it would attract a newer player base. Keeping the old rules and figures will make the learning curve steeper for new players. This will likely discourage all but the more determined from buying the game. Also, the game play will be prone to suffering from some imbalanced playing pieces and confusing rules.

Here is a very good exposition at the Mageknight thread at Boardgame Geek

Mage Knight's fans hope that the revival announced by Wizkids will include the Mage Knight CMG and not just the game universe.

Atlantean Empire

The Atlantean Empire employs Technomagic, the arcane discipline created by their founder Tezla. The Atlanteans deploy powerful golems and stalwart soldiers. They are surprisingly resilient with abilities like Rally which repairs damage to demoralized troops and Field Repair which does the same to Golems.

Draconum

The Draconum are draconic beings who follow the path of warrior-monks. They are dangerous in close combat. Thunder Blow allows them to continue attacking a figure in close combat so long as the attack succeeds. They only stop when the attack fails or the opponent falls.
