MTG Elf Guide
Elves have been a major part of Magic: The Gathering since the beginning. They've found their way into a lot of championship decks over the years, and it's hard to imagine a successful green deck that didn't have at least a few of these forest-dwellers in it. From the classic Llanowar Elves from Alpha up until present day, elves have been and will continue to be a major part of the game.
In the story-lines, elves are distributed widely in the MTG multiverse, with many different kinds of elves present: Llanowar Elves, Argothian Elves, Yavimaya Elves, and the Skyshoroud Elves just to name a few. They are almost always associated with green mana and forests, and are frequently called on to defend their forest homes.
I've always liked green decks, partly because I think they're fun to play, partly because I like the paintings of forests the best, and partly because it's really fun to beat an opponent using nothing but elves occasionally! I love how the game designers allow for great synergy between various elf cards (some of which we'll examine a bit later), and how reliable these decks usually are. There are no fancy combos to pull off (usually), and not many elves with large casting costs, so elf decks tend to play pretty well. Let's take a look at a few elves that you'll want in a good elf deck.

MTG Elf Deck Ideas
There are many ways to build an elf deck. For example, you could use the great mana-generating capabilities of elves to ramp up quickly to play one or two huge creatures. Or you could use the elves themselves as quick, cheap beaters that are easily pumped with cards like Elvish Champion. Or, there are a number of combos that you can use that involve elves and synergy between two or more cards to create very powerful effects.
Whichever method you choose, elf decks are a great way to achieve victory in MTG.
Some more of my MTG Articles...
Llanowar Elves
Llanowar Elves is, quite simply, a classic. This card dates all the way back to Alpha, and has been a staple not only in elf decks, but in all green decks, for decades. The advantages of Llanowar Elves for your deck are obvious. Forest -> Llanowar Elves is the ideal first turn play, setting you up for a killer second turn. Elf decks all about tempo, and the faster you get elves on the table the better. 3 green mana on your second turn can be devastating to an opponent hoping for a slower game. No elf deck should be without 4 of these. There is also a copycat card called Fyndhorn elves. I don't know why both were printed, but Fyndhorn Elves is also a 1/1, costs 1 green mana to play, and has the same "T: Add G to your mana pool" ability. I guess if you need more mana, there's no rule I know of that says you can't have 4 of each!
Elvish Archdruid / Elvish Champion
These two are similar in a lot of ways, and in that you're going to want to have one or the other in play as soon as possible, so I put them together. basically, they're one of the best ways to pump up your elves. Elves kind of tend to be cheap, but a bit on the wimpy side. Having one of these guys in play remedies that, however.I think I like the Elvish Archdruid a little better, because he adds some extra mana flexibility, but the Elvish Champion adding forestwalk to all your elves can be devastating if you're playing against another green or partially green deck. Note also that the Elvish Champion's creature type just says Lord, so he actually doesn't count as an elf. Since there are lots of cards in elf decks whose effects depend o the number of elves in play, this can be a disadvantage.
Elvish Vanguard
Elvish Vanguard is a great card to get out early in the game, if you're playing an elf deck. He just keeps getting beefier as the game progresses! Pretty soon you'll be looking at a pretty powerful creature. And at a casting cost of only 2 mana, it's easy to get him out early before you play all your other elves. This is definitely one to consider for your elf deck. He's even better if you can find a way through your opponent's defenses. For example, you could give him forestwalk with an Elvish Champion. Or how about this: On your 2nd turn, you've got three mana if you have Llanowar Elves in play already, so... Elvish Vanguard + Rancor = pretty darn good second turn.
More Great Elves
There are tons more elves you may want to consider for your deck ( a quick search on www.magiccards.info tells me there are 251 cards with the type elf).Cards like Caller of the Claw, Civic Wayfinder, Deranged Hermit, Eladamri, Lord of Leaves, and Elvish Pioneer all could fit well in an elf deck. Be sure to design your deck with the kinds of decks you'll be playing against in mind. Some elves won't help you at all against certain decks, while they might be game-changing against others!
