Magic: The Gathering - MTG Painlands & Shocklands

Pain Lands are a type of dual land in the collectible card game Magic: The Gathering. These lands allow you tap them for mana of two different colors, at a cost of 1 damage to you. They can also be tapped for colorless mana with no damage. While not as good as the original dual lands, these cards can be very useful in a dual-colored deck, especially one that requires lots of colored mana and where a little damage to you won't be a problem. The allied-color pain lands were introduced to MTG in the Ice Age cycle, and the enemy colored pain lands were introduced later, in Apocalypse.

Shock lands are slightly different. These don't cost life when tapped to produce colored mana, but they do come into play tapped unless you pay 2 life as you play them. 2 life is equivalent to a Shock (a classic red direct damage card), hence the name shock lands. The slight difference may be advantageous for some decks, depending on the strategy you want to employ.
