How to Make Your Own Candles

Relax In The Light Of A Candle

Candles give a relaxing and magical atmosphere.

The flames of a fire or candle have always captured my attention. I use to sit by the fireplace and look into the flames for hours, thinking of nothing or everything.

The dim, flickering orange light of candles is fascinating and immediately relaxes the senses. A way to intensify the effect of these candles is to use fragrant ones with various colors that appeal to the senses.

Although these candles are extremely luring, candles are expensive. The best way to get around this is to make your own fragrant and colorful candles.

Learn To Make a Candle

I soon found out that there is a lot more that goes into making a candle than I could have ever thought.

For example, the wick size in comparison to the size of the candle and the type of candle wax used, has a very specific formula that makes the difference between a candle that burns correctly and one that, well doesn't burn at all or burns very unevenly.

So I started researching, but all the information I seemed to find was either written for someone who already had the basic's down, or the instructions bounced around from this step to that step then back again. I was so confused and frustrated! Does this sound familiar?

In Basic Candle Making you will find candle making ideas and techniques that experienced professional candle makers use - methods that save time and make your candles beautiful the first time.

You Learn How To:

Find and select the best candle making equipment and supplies for someone just getting started in candle making. How to avoid investing in too much or too little when just beginning your new hobby/business

Choosing the perfect wax and wick for the type of candle you are making. (Believe it or not this is actually one of the most difficult parts of candle making. You won't have to experience the same frustrations of trial and errors I did, you will have the advantage of knowing what and what not to do..FROM THE START!

Selecting the proper amounts of candle scent and color. Too much of either can causes undesired effects and wasted materials. The balance between these two elements is critical

How to Make you own candles

Create wonderful gifts and holiday decorations.

You Need

paraffin wax or beeswax (in any form)
wick
electric frying pan or saucepan for stovetop heating
tin can, such as a coffee can
plastic cups (any size, depending on how big you want the candle to be)
large spoons (used only for crafts)
crayons or natural colorant
craft sticks, dowels, or pencils
masking tape
cheese grater
water
oven mitt

How to Do

Fill the frying pan or pot halfway with water and place the tin can inside the pot. Pour the desired amount of wax into the tin.

Turn on the stove or the frying pan and allow the water to come to a full boil. The wax will slowly melt to a liquid form. The tin can will rattle around, but it won't tip over. When boiling, hot water could spit out a bit, so make sure to stand clear during the melting process.

Take a plastic cup and cut a piece of wick a little longer than the length of the cup.

Either tape or wrap one end of the wick around the center of the craft stick. Rest the stick across the top of the cup, so the wick is standing vertically in the center of the cup, touching the bottom.

If you are using crayons as your colorant, grate different colored crayons into separate piles. You can also use natural, powder colorants to dye the candles. Stir in the grated crayons or colorant once the wax is fully liquefied.

After turning off the heat, pour the desired amount of wax into the cups. The tin can will be very hot, so use an oven mitt to protect your hands.

Allow the candles to cool overnight. The next day the candles should slide easily out of the plastic cups. If there is resistance, carefully roll the side of each cup against a hard surface and the wax should free itself from the plastic. You can also cut the cup if you are not planning on reusing it.

i love burning candles but haven't made myself for years. One thought I had while reading through your instructions is that you could use the recipe module and give folks the option of a printable version. Tonight its just too hot to even burn a candle in Fargo. Well done!

My grandfather used to keep bees when I was little, so we frequently had beeswax candles. I would love to try to make some pretty fragrant ones now though. Thanks for your suggestions. =D
