Magnolias Are In Bloom
All over the South you can see and smell the blooming Magnolias and what a site it is to behold!
The fragrance is like none other and hard to describe but one whiff this time of year and you will know what I am talking about. The blossoms are beautiful from the time the bud forms until they are in full bloom. These sometimes huge blossoms give a new meaning to the term White on White. Just look at all the shades of white against all the gorgeous shades of green. Isn't it amazing.
What is the Southern Magnolia Tree?
Southern Magnolia Tree on Wikipedia
I studied Botany in college and this was one tree that I will always remember the scientific name and other important facts. However, Wikipedia offers a much more descriptive explanation.
Magnolia grandiflora, commonly known as the Southern magnolia or bull bay, is a magnolia native to the southeastern United States, from coastal Virginia south to central Florida, and west to eastern Texas and Arkansas. Reaching 27.5 m (90 ft) in height, it is a large striking evergreen tree with large dark green leaves and large white fragrant flowers. Widely cultivated around the world, over a hundred cultivars have been bred and marketed commercially. The timber is hard and heavy, and has been used commercially to make furniture, pallets, and veneer.
This Magestic Tree Was Standing When I Was A Child
Many Magnolias are in bloom in our town but this one will always be my favorite
Yes, this Magestic Magnolia Tree was on the route we took to school back in the 50's and I have climbed up it's branches and absorbed its breath taking beauty and inhaled its unforgettable aroma.
I would estimate that this stately tree is at least 40 feet tall and 30 feet wide.

I think I saw a Rope Swing on the other side. These trees are great for climbing and for swinging.
When we were kids we had a tire swing in our Mimosa Tree and I did some of my best thinking in that swing.

Plant A Southern Magnolia In Honor Of Your Child
We did!
We planted our Magnolia Tree when our son was born so it has always been known as his tree. He grew by leaps and bounds and so did his tree. It is fun to take a picture of your child standing by the tree every year on their birthday. Our son is now 30 years old and measures 6 ft 4 inches. His Magnolia Tree is over 30 feet tall.
All the shades of green really give the tree depth beyond comprehension. The new growth is a bright and shining green with the older growth various stages of Olive to Hunter greens. It is an evergreen so we often cut the Magnolia Leaves at Christmastime to use with our decorations. I shine them up a bit with Cooking Oil and they look so pretty on my mantle.

Reflections of a Mississippi Magnolia- A Life in Poems
by Patricia Neely Dorsey
I received a message on Face Book from Patricia Neely-Dorsey directed me to her link Patricia Neely-Dorsey "A CELEBRATION OF THE SOUTH AND THINGS SOUTHERN" about this book and I am so glad that I did. It sounds wonderful and even though we have never met I can tell that we share an appreciation for the beautiful Southern Magnolia.
She also said that she enjoyed reading this lens.

On her website, Patricia Neely-Dorsey says this about her book:
My book Reflections of a Mississippi Magnolia is a true celebration of the south and things southern. Using childhood memories, personal thoughts and dreams, I attempt to give a positive glimpse into the southern way of life. There are so many negative connotations associated with Mississippi and the south in general. I want to show a flip side of the coin. There is much to love about this much maligned and misunderstood part of our country. I would really love for you to get to KNOW Mississippi (and the south) in a different light and I want to introduce you. I invite you to Meet Mississippi Through Poetry, Prose and the written word.

- Lovely photos and just a wonderful lens! My Grandmother has a magnolia tree. It is a sort of dwarf I guess because it just doesn't get any taller than 5 feet. It blooms though and they are wonderful. Thank you for your comments on my pinecone lens. :)

- Do you know my dear that it was a couple of Sundays ago that we returned home to find a big old pile of well TREE in our neighbor's backyard! It was a Magnolia Tree that he finally got permission for the board to cut down. It was a beautiful shade tree, but was placed too close to his house. At least we still have these at the entrance of our community.

- Hi Robin. BJ is a friend of mine and she sent the following reply. She also said that unfortunately she did not have any pictures. Just as a side note: BJ sang at our wedding!
Here is her response: Our neighbor was a florist, and she experimented for days about how to do the bridesmaids' magnolia blossoms with blossoms from the tree in our front yard.....how far ahead she could pick it, how long it would take the blossom to open, in the heat of June. I remember she wrapped the one stem with white satin ribbon, but there was no bow or anything hanging down. Just the one magnolia blossom and a few, maybe 3, green leaves. I am pretty sure she must have included something underneath the satin wrap to keep moisture in the stem. There was no difference in the bouquets of the 3 bridesmaids or my sister, the maid of honor.Their dresses were tea length white summer dresses. That is all I remember, and I can't even remember what the dresses looked like.
Wish I could be of more help...bj
